SoCal Showdown Aims for Fun in the Sun

CHULA VISTA, California - A record more than 550 archers took the field at the 2018 Doinker SoCal Showdown Official Practice day today under sunny skies. The third of four United States Archery Team (USAT) Qualifier Series Events of the season expects hot competition as the race for national ranking points is on.

Tournament Director Keaton Chia welcomed archers to the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center: "Every year we like to have a theme that we challenge ourselves with, so this year we are excited to marry top quality competition with good hearted fun. We hope everyone has a great time competing with each other and bringing out the best in each other's performance, while also enjoying all the extra fun activities we have brought to the event."

In addition to a 72 arrow qualification round and head to head elimination matches, archers are also welcome to join social media contests from the field and partake in skeet archery, shooting at a 3-D dinosaur target and everyone's favorite: the Iron Bullseye competition. More info on these awesome events is available here.

"I love SoCal, it's my favorite USAT event," added recurve archer Lily Lucero. "There's an element of excitement being in California and the Archery Festival adds so much fun. This year we're doing a Dunk Tank and I think those activities let people loosen up and be less stressed. The atmosphere of competition at USAT events is sometimes tense and overwhelming and this helps people unwind and it's a really good way to diffuse the tension that often comes with this sport."

As USA Archery continues to experiment with USAT event formats, tomorrow's qualification will split into two sessions with all divisions qualifying in the same day. Then, the morning session qualifiers - the recurve men and compound women's divisions - will return in the evening for the 1/32nd elimination round.

Live results from the competition this weekend can be found on USA Archery's Live Results Page. Photos from each day are available here. Join the fun with #DoinkerShowdown and follow USA Archery FacebookTwitter, and Instagram for more from the event.
