SoCal Showdown Starts Scoring with Qualification

CHULA VISTA, California - The 2018 Doinker SoCal Showdown began scoring today with qualification for all divisions and the 1/32nd elimination round for the recurve men and compound women's categories. Those categories shot the morning line under overcast skies before wind picked up for a challenging afternoon session.

For eligible cadet archers, today's qualification was also the ranking round for the Youth Olympic Games - U.S. Team Trials, which will wrap with round robin matches on Monday.

The recurve senior men's division was incredibly tight, with just one point separating each archer in the top three. Jack Williams took the top spot with a 664 just ahead of Brady Ellison and Matt Zumbo.

"The first half started off a little rough," commented Williams. "But I pulled it back in the second half. It's really important to have experience on knowing what to do and when to do it, so I knew that like my form wasn't really off, so I just dialed it in, knew what to fix and brought it back."

The compound senior men's division was equally competitive, with James Lutz taking the top spot over Braden Gellenthien in his best USAT performance to date. Lutz commented, "It was a fun day. The wind was challenging at times, but everything just clicked and it ended up being a really good day. My equipment felt grat, so as long as I executed the shot like I needed to it hit the middle."

Olympians Khatuna Lorig and Mackenzie Brown were standouts in a cutthroat race for points with international competitors on the senior recurve women's field. International archers also took high qualification finishes on the compound senior women's side, but USA's Jamie Van Natta and Alexis Ruiz ranked in the top three.
