CHULA VISTA, California – The 2019 World Archery Youth Championships will be held in Madrid, Spain at the end of August this summer. Team USA has a strong history of exceptional performances at this prestigious biannual event and with the team nominated following today’s Team Trials, is in good standing to keep the winning traditions alive.
World No. 9 Jack Williams is coming off a hot performance at the senior World Archery Championships and will lead the recurve junior men in Spain along with Seth McWherter and Matthew Nofel. Joony Kim is the team alternate.
Amy Jung and Eliana Claps, who are also representing Team USA at the World University Games this summer will join Alexandria Zuletta-Visser as the recurve junior women’s team. Inga Pever was named the alternate.
Youth Olympic Champion Trenton Cowles, who also won the SoCal Showdown as a senior yesterday, will shoot as a cadet recurve with Joonsuh Oh and Joseph Scarboro; Andrew Park finished as the alternate.
“Representing Team USA again is an honor. It’s amazing to represent my country,” shared Cowles. On his teammates, Cowles added: “As a team we have a lot of chemistry; we’re also all fast shooters and Madrid is going to be a blast.”
Casey Kaufhold, who has been a staple on the world cup and world championship circuit for Team USA this year joins Youth Olympian Catalina GNoriega and Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez for the recurve cadet women’s squad, with Gabrielle Sasai as the alternate.
Reigning World Youth Champion Alexis Ruiz, who has been a podium beast on the world stage this year, joins Savannah Vanderwier, who also won team silver at the last World Archery Youth Championships and bronze at the 2018 World Archery Field Championships as a junior, and World Indoor Championships junior team gold medalist Anna Scarbrough for the compound women’s team.
On making the team again, Ruiz commented: “It means everything. My goal was to make the team so I can go back and defend my title. I’m so excited I was able to do it. I shot well today and I’m really happy to be back on the team. This team is all my friends; we grew up together and I kind of left to shoot in the senior division so it’s nice to shoot with them all again.”
Connor Sears was a strong standout in the compound junior men’s trials and will compete in Spain with Curtis Broadnax and Cooper French. Anthony Ferraro is the alternate.
Matthew Russel and Sawyer Sullivan locked up spots on the compound cadet men’s team, with Cole Zueg winning a shoot off match to take the third spot over alternate Isaac Sullivan.
Indoor world record holder Faith Miller topped the compound cadet women’s trials and will team up with Mackenzie Weatherspoon and Raegan Bender. Sadie Tesch is the team alternate.
