CHULA VISTA, California – SoCal Showdown wrapped today with tricky winds and exciting match finishes.
Youth Olympic Champion Trenton Cowles topped the recurve men’s podium, winning his first senior USAT gold. "I'm still in shock," commented Cowles. "I'm at a loss for words - honestly I didn't think I was shooting that well, but I managed to pull it together and shot great."
World Champion Brady Ellison was upset early by World Para Champion Michael Lukow, who later went out to Gator Cup Champion Matthew Nofel, who finished with silver. World No. 9 Jack Williams finished with the bronze.
Gator Cup silver medalist Mackenzie Brown had another outstanding performance this weekend, finishing with gold today over Catalina GNoriega. Casey Kaufhold took the bronze over Eliana Claps.
Paige Pearce came in from last week’s silver finish at the World Archery Championships hungry for the win: "That was my goal before I came to this tournament - I was like, 'I want redemption for last weekend,' and I got it. Going into that last match, I was like, 'I don't care what I have to do, but I'm not going to do what I did last weekend,' and it went way better than I expected. It feels really good. It just goes to show, change your mindset, get fired up and it can pay off in the end."
Lexi Keller won silver in her highest podium finish in a few years, and Linda Ochoa Anderson won bronze over Jamie Van Natta.
Matt Sullivan repeated his SoCal Showdown title from last year, winning gold again in the compound men’s division over Steve Anderson, and Shawnn Vincent made his first senior USAT podium finish, winning bronze.
Josef Scarboro, who won gold at Arizona Cup, silver at Gator Cup, took his third straight podium finish, winning gold for the recurve junior men. Holland Linterman repeated her junior recurve women’s gold win from Gator Cup, which was her first USAT podium finish just last month.
Arizona Cup Champion Joonsuh Oh topped the recurve cadet men’s podium again, winning gold after a dominant performance this whole week so far. Baja’s Gutierrez outscored top seed Eunice Choi for the women’s gold.
Connor Sears took his first compound junior men’s podium finish of the season, winning gold over Cooper French, while Anna Scarborogh took the women’s gold. World record holder Faith Miller won the cadet women’s gold and Sawyer Sullivan topped the men’s podium.
Scott Starnes once again crushed the compound master men’s competition, and Tom Stevenson Jr. won the recurve master men’s bracket.
Alanna Dunaway won the Arizona and Gator Cups this year, but finished with silver for the compound master women today behind Dawn Groszko of Canada. Para archer Martha Chavez finished with the bronze. Arizona Cup champion and recurve masters women standout Sue Bock also topped the podium again, winning gold in a close match against Tatyana Muntyan.
