SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – Five championship records were set by USA archers as the 2024 Youth and Masters Pan American Championships got underway, with four coming in barebow and one in compound.
The USA has 28 archers competing, ranging from U15 to Masters, and two of the Masters were among the record breakers. Kenneth Brunko set the pace in the compound 50+ men with a new Pan American Championships record of 691, beating the previous best set by compatriot Andre Shelby (682) six years ago.
Among the other record-setters were Cheri Gandy in barebow 50+ women. She shot 549. The previous record was 522 and held by Jenifer Stoner since 2022.
Ethan Mitchell’s score of 567 was 103 more than the Championship record achieved by Max Rossiter two years ago in barebow U18 men.
Anastacia Godman improved on the barebow U21 women’s record she set in 2022. On that occasion, she managed 500 when the event was held in Canada. Two years on, she scored 568.
And Elijah Hillensbeck laid down a marker in the barebow U21 men with a championship best of 509.
There are 24 individual competitions with many moving to the elimination stage on Thursday. The record setters all took top seeding after qualification, as did Savannah O’Donohue in compound U18 women and Carrie Lin in compound 50+ women. Elsewhere, Matthew Parmenter is the second seed after qualification in the recurve U18 men.
Gold medal matches in barebow U15 mixed, barebow U18 women, barebow U21 women and barebow U21 men – to take place on Sunday – will be all-USA affairs.
The barebow U15 mixed involves Ayana Butt and Gabriel Urgelles. The barebow U18 women is between Jamie DiGiacomo and Riley Adams. Godman and Abigail Sparpaglione will contest the barebow U21 women’s gold medal match, while Hillensbeck and Rossiter will meet for the barebow U21 men's crown.
