NEWBERRY, Fla. – The 2024 Easton Foundations Gator Cup, the second of four USAT Qualifier Series events of the year, has the added drama of including the penultimate stages in both the Olympic and Paralympic Team Qualification and Trials.
Stage 5 of Olympic Trials and Stage 2 of Paralympic Trials will take place as part of Gator Cup, which runs until Sunday. The final stages for both are to be held next Monday and Tuesday, after which the quota slots currently won will have a name alongside them.
There are still quota slots to be claimed on the Olympic Games side. To date, the USA has one in the men’s division but has three on the women’s side, the maximum allowed. The Final Qualification Tournament will be held next month with World Cup Stage 3 in Turkey. Remaining quota slots will then be allocated to the host nation and other countries based on team world rankings. (Read the 2024 Olympic Games Qualification System).
The USA has acquired five quota slots for the Paralympic Games. They have the maximum two slots in both the recurve men open and compound men open, as well as one slot in the W1 women.
New this year at Gator Cup will be a mixed team round test event, which will take place on Thursday. Qualification for the individual competition starts on Friday. The full schedule can be found here.
A number of champions are back to defend the title won 12 months ago, including Brady Ellison and Casey Kaufhold. Ellison took the recurve men’s crown in 2023, winning it for the third year in a row. Last year, though, he needed a one arrow shootoff to deny Jackson Mirich. Kaufhold is aiming for a three-peat in 2024, having won recurve women in 2022 and ’23.
Tanja Gellenthien and Sawyer Sullivan were senior compound winners in 2023, and will be back in northern Florida seeking more of the same. Maggie Brensinger, the 2024 USA Archery Indoor Nationals Final champion in the barebow women’s division, also returns to defend her Gator Cup title. Others hoping to enjoy repeat success at Gator Cup include local archer Mark Williams in the recurve 50+ men.
The gold medal matches for the senior event will be broadcast live on USA Archery’s Facebook and YouTube channels on Sunday from 2pm EDT.
