BERLIN, Germany – Casey Kaufhold finished fourth in the recurve women on the final day of the World Archery Championships, and in doing so secured a first Olympic quota slot for the United States ahead of the Games in Paris next year.
“I am happy I got the quota spot," Kaufhold said. "That was the biggest thing we were going for. To have that is satisfying but to not have a medal is definitely disappointing but it makes me hungrier for next time.”
The 19-year-old began the final day with a stunning 6-4 quarterfinal win over An San, the triple Olympic champion from two years ago when claiming individual, team and mixed team gold in Tokyo.
Kaufhold faced top seed Alejandra Valencia (MEX) in the last four, and led 5-3 going into the final set. Valencia won that set 29-28, forcing a shootoff, with the Mexican prevailing 10-9. That defeat took Kaufhold into the bronze medal match with Satsuki Noda, which the Japanese archer won 6-2.
“I think I had a lot of opportunity today but I didn’t quite take the shots that I could have," she added. "There were some shots I definitely could have made better, especially in the shoot-off."
The next opportunity for the USA to claim spots will be at the 2023 Pan American Games in Chile, with archery taking place from November 1-5.
This is followed by an additional continental qualifying Pan Am Championships event in the Spring of 2024. The Final Qualification Tournament will be held with World Cup 3 in June 2024.
Final remaining quota slots will be allocated to the host nation and to other countries based on team world rankings in June 2024. (Read the 2024 Olympic Games Qualification System).
