NEWBERRY, Fla. – Before the 2025 Easton Foundations Gator Cup starts with mixed team competition on Thursday, the best young talent will take to the line for the World Archery Youth Championships/Junior Pan Am Games U.S. Team Trials.
More than 180 archers will compete on Wednesday at the Easton Newberry Archery Center for the opportunity to represent the United States on the international stage later this year.
Those who register as U21 will be eligible for both the World Archery Youth Championships and Junior Pan Am Games teams. Athletes who register as U18 are only eligible for World Youth.
The 2025 World Archery Youth Championships take place in Winnipeg, Canada from August 17-24. The USA is set to send a 24-strong team, with three archers per division.
The Junior Pan American Games are in Asunción, Paraguay, with the archery competition running from August 10-12. The USA has four slots for this event. These were gained last month in Argentina at the 2nd Qualifier for the Junior Pan American Games.
Wednesday’s Trials will be brimming with quality in the recurve and compound division. Twelve archers who made the 2023 World Archery Youth Championships will be among the field, including Liko Arreola, Joshua Baek, Cham Chung, Landyn Cox, Leann Drake, Dewey Hathaway, Grady Kane, Emma Kim, Pierce McAdam, Gabrielle Sasai, Christian Stoddard and Riley Tateyama.
Hathaway (pictured above) was a double gold medalist when the World Youth Championships were held in Limerick, Ireland two years ago. Others to return home with medals were Arreola, Cox, Drake, Kane, Sasai and Stoddard.
Sasai was gold medalist in the recurve women’s senior division at the AAE Arizona Cup earlier this month. Stoddard will be back in Florida two weeks after representing the USA at World Cup Stage 1. He won gold in recurve men at the USA Archery Indoor Nationals Final in Las Vegas last month.
Among those seeking to make the team for the World Youth Championships will be compound archer Kaylee Gurney, who surprised Paige Pearce to win the Indoor Nationals Final and claimed bronze at Arizona Cup.
Abigail Winterton was named as the alternate on the compound women’s U21 team two years ago. She returns this week eager to book her ticket to Winnipeg and arrives in Newberry having won bronze on her World Cup debut earlier this month in the compound women’s division.
Another young talent on show will be Caelan Shanklin. He was second seed, aged just 16, at the Indoor Nationals Final in recurve men.
