Bronze for compound women at World Cup Stage 2 while the men set their sights on gold

YECHEON, Korea - Day two of the Hyundai Archery World Cup Stage 2 brought its first medal matches and, in turn, the first medal for the USA, as the compound trio of Olivia Dean, Carson Krahe and Alexis Ruiz won bronze.

The compound men, meanwhile, must wait until Saturday for their medal match, when they will tackle Turkey for gold.

James Lutz, Kris Schaff and Sawyer Sullivan continued where they left off on Tuesday when they registered the top score from qualification. They defeated Italy 238-231 in the quarterfinals before needing a shootoff to get past India.

For Dean, Krahe and Ruiz, a 235-234 win over Estonia took them into a semifinal contest with India, in which they lost 233-229, sending them into the bronze medal match with Korea, the number one seeds. The USA team overcame the hosts 234-230.

Compound competition continues on Thursday with individual elimination. Sullivan has a bye to the 1/16 round, where he awaits the winner of Brandon Hawes (AUS) and Seunghyun Park (KOR). The other three compound men begin a round earlier. Lutz meets Hoo Sam Patrick Lee (HKG), Schaff plays Trung Chien Nguyen (VIE) and Kappers faces Alon Yuan Jucatan (PHI).

In the compound women, Olivia Dean and Carson Krahe have byes to the 1/16 round of eliminations. Dean’s opponent will be Georgina Graham (AUS) or Paola Ramirez Gonzalez (PUR). Krahe will face Elisa Roner (ITA). Ruiz and Cox begin at the 1/32 round, against Binderiya Orkhon (MGL) and Pham Ngoc Anh Le (VIE).

Recurve archers were put through their paces on Wednesday with qualification, and will return on Thursday for their team elimination matches. On the men’s side, Gabriel Anderson, Brady Ellison and Jack Williams take on Malaysia in the 1/8 round, with third seed Chinese Taipei awaiting in the quarterfinals.

The recurve women of Catalina GNoriega, Casey Kaufhold and Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez meets Iran, with third seeds Germany the opponent in the last eight.

Individual elimination matches take place on Friday for recurve. Of those through, Ellison begins against Pablo Acha Gonzalez (ESP) at the 1/32 round, Williams meets Senna Roos (NED), Kaufhold faces Madalina Amaistroaie (ROU), while Mucino-Fernandez takes on Qixuan An (CHN).

Recurve mixed team eliminations also take place on Friday. Ellison and Kaufhold will combine to play Indonesia, with top seeds and hosts Korea awaiting the winner in the 1/8 round.
