HERMOSILLO, Mexico – Team USA claimed fourth and fifth on Sunday, through recurve pair Casey Kaufhold and Brady Ellison, as the 17th Archery World Cup concluded in Mexico.
In the recurve men’s competition, five-time winner Brady Ellison – incredibly appearing in a 13th consecutive World Cup Final – was toppled by Italy’s Mauro Nespoli in a high quality quarterfinal, losing 6-2. Nespoli went on to win bronze.
Kaufhold came through her quarterfinal, defeating Michelle Kroppen (GER) 6-2. This set up a last four contest with eventual World Cup gold medalist Kang Chae Young. The Korean marched through 7-1. Kaufhold then lost 6-0 to the number one seed Lim Sihyeon (KOR) in the bronze medal match.
On Saturday, Sawyer Sullivan and James Lutz finished fifth and sixth respectively in the compound men’s event, while Liko Arreola came in eighth in the compound women.
The Archery World Cup involved eight archers in each category. To qualify for the World Cup Final, archers had to have either won one of the four stages this year - in Turkey, China, Colombia, or Paris – or achieved consistently high finishes to rank as one of the top points qualifiers.
Arreola won gold at the World Cup Stage #3 in Medellin in June. She beat the outstanding Sara Lopez (COL) in Colombia, to become the youngest individual medalist at a World Cup aged just 15 years and 330 days. Kaufhold triumphed in Paris last month at World Cup Stage #4.
For the USA to have five archers from the 32 competing was testament to the talent across both compound and recurve.
