HERMOSILLO, Mexico – On a tough day in the north-west Mexican city of Hermosillo, the USA’s compound trio of Liko Arreola, James Lutz and Sawyer Sullivan fell at the quarterfinal stage of the Archery World Cup Final.
Lutz, the 2019 world champion, had arguably the toughest draw against world number one and defending compound men’s champion Mike Schloesser (NED), and despite being within a point heading into the fifth and final end, the American could not turn it around, losing 147-145.
Arreola and Sullivan went even closer, with both defeated in one arrow shootoffs. After a slow start, which saw him trail by two points after two ends, Sullivan moved up through the gears, rattling off nine 10s in a row to force sudden death as he and Abhishek Virma (IND) scored 146. With a place in the semifinals at stake, Sullivan then shot a nine to Virma’s 10.
The compound men’s competition was played under the lights in Hermosillo. Earlier, under clear blue skies, 16-year-old Arreola fought her way back into her match with Cho Su A of Korea, as both archers finished on 142 after 15 arrows. Cho’s 10 in the shootoff was closer to the middle than Arreola’s, allowing the Korean to advance.
The Archery World Cup Final concludes on Sunday when Casey Kaufhold and Brady Ellison compete in the recurve competition. In the recurve women event, Kaufhold meets Michelle Kroppen (GER). Ellison takes on Italy’s Mauro Nespoli in the recurve men’s contest.
