WROCLAW, Poland - It was a week of ups and downs for Team USA at the World Cup in Wroclaw - but the American compound archers seized the moment, claiming mixed team gold for the first time this year, women's team gold, men's individual silver - and narrowly missed men's team bronze and women's individual bronze.
Crystal Gauvin (Dayville, Connecticut) could argue that this World Cup was her breakout performance: the archer, who's only been shooting for two years, was part of the gold medal winning women's compound team as well as winning the mixed team gold with Braden Gellenthien (Hudson, Massachusetts).
"So thankful I had the opportunity to shoot with great teammates here in Poland! Because of them I was lucky enough to walk away with a gold medal from both of my team events today!" commented Gauvin on social media following her matches.
For the women's compound team gold medal, teammates Gauvin, Christie Colin (Yorktown, Pennsylvania) and World No. 1 Erika Jones (Grand Island, Nebraska) really pulled together when it counted.
"Christie, Crystal, and I won the team gold today at the 4th World Cup in Wroclaw, Poland!" Jones noted in an update to fans. "I have to say, I'm VERY proud of our 2014 women's compound World Cup teams! We made it to 4/4 gold medal matches this year, and won 3/4 gold medals!"
Though Colin was unable to overcome Russia's Albina Loginova in the women's individual bronze medal match, and the compound men's team was edged out by Italy for the team bronze, Reo Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho) delivered the final U.S. medal of the event - a silver.
Though Wilde started behind in the gold medal match by four points, he started hitting ten after ten to put the pressure on his opponent, France's PJ Deloche. Though Wilde delivered six straight tens to close the match, according to World Archery, it wasn't quite enough to stop Deloche, who walked away with the gold medal win.
Still, Wilde will add another World Cup medal to his very sizable collection - and from the World Cup Final rankings, it appears that Wilde, Jones, Bridger Deaton (Pella, Iowa) and Brady Ellison (Payson, Arizona) could all earn spots in the Final in Lausanne next month.
