WROCLAW, Poland - "I'm really proud of our team and the way we shot today! Go Team USA," posted Christie Colin (Yorktown, Pennsylvania) after a decisive victory by the U.S. compound women's team that punched their ticket to the gold medal final versus Russia.
At the fourth and final stage of the Archery World Cup for this year, tensions have run high as athletes shoot for the last chance to take part in the World Cup Final, and archers shoot their very best hoping to solidify or improve their world rankings.
Colin will join teammates Crystal Gauvin (Dayville, Connecticut) and Erika Jones (Grand Island, Nebraska) - the World No. 1 ranked archer - in tomorrow's final, which will be live streamed by World Archery.
Colin and Gauvin will also booth shoot for other medals tomorrow; Colin earned a spot in the bronze medal final after an incredibly close tiebreaker shoot-off versus Colombia's Sara Lopez. She'll face Russia's Albina Loginova in the bronze medal match tomorrow.
For Gauvin, in just her second competitive season in archery, this event was proof that her rigorous training schedule is paying off. Gauvin was the number two qualifier at this World Cup - her first outdoors - and will team up with Braden Gellenthien to shoot for compound mixed team gold tomorrow.
The U.S. compound men also delivered strong performances, but just missed a spot in the gold medal final. With a one point loss to Mexico - shooting a 231 to 232 - the compound men will shoot for a bronze for the first time this season, versus Italy.
Reo Wilde - who did not make the U.S. team for this event despite a strong top eight performance - decided that wouldn't stop him from making this weekend's finals. He shot two perfect 150s during yesterday's individual eliminations to clinch a spot in the gold medal match versus France's PJ Deloche.
"I felt like I shot really good today," Wilde told World Archery. "Things fell right in excellent conditions. It was just really nice to shoot some good arrows." Before shooting the qualification rounds, Wilde had made some changes to his equipment.
Following a finish that didn't feel quite right to him, he "changed it back," according to his interview with World Archery. "I had been shooting well the last few weeks, including our US Nationals, so I knew what I was capable of."
Solid shooting but tough match results for the recurve
archers and teams mean that the U.S. won't be in Sunday's recurve finals, but
highlights of the team eliminations included very strong shooting by the U.S.
women's recurve team versus Russian Federation in the first round of
eliminations, and a very narrow tiebreaker loss to Georgia. The recurve men's
team, who qualified high and had two top eight individual finishes, were
stopped in a tough team quarterfinal loss versus Russia.
