BARCELONETA, Puerto Rico - The annual Juan Enrique Barrios Cup began scoring today with 72 arrows of qualification in The Estadio Pedro Rom�n de Manat�. This World Archery America's World Ranking Event and Para World Ranking Event has archers competing from 18 countries, including standouts from Colombia, Canada, Korea and Brazil. Of the almost 40 U.S. athletes competing for international event experience, many top U.S. para and youth athletes are gearing up for this year's World Archery Para Championships and World Archery Youth Championships.
U.S. compound open men swept the top three qualification slots with top scorer Kevin Polish followed by Ben Thompson and Paralympic Champion Andre Shelby. Just a few points behind, Gabriel Marcozzi ranked 5th. Michael Lukow and Timothy Palumbo were the top qualifiers for the recurve open men's division, while Perry Robert and Jim Vennera also qualified in the top ten.
Jerry Shields and Chuck Lear qualified first and second for the W1 men's division while Paralympian Lisa Coryell ranked fourth for the W1 women. Teresa Wallace and Martha Chavez qualified fifth and seventh for the compound open women.
For the combined able bodied and para athlete qualification, top archers from Colombia Sara Lopez and Alejandra Usquiano took the top two spots, but USA's Isabella Bastiani ranked third and Jennifer Schneider qualified sixth for the recurve women.
In the recurve junior competition, Karisa McAmis qualified first for the women by a wide margin and Mathew Nofel ranked second for the men.
Separated by just two points, Hala Skelton and Mackenzie Kormann took the top two qualification spots for the compound cadet women and Trey McDonald ranked first for the men's division. Savannah Mary Ward qualified second for the recurve cadet women, ahead of teammates Olivia Perrego and Ramsey Lechner who ranked fifth and sixth. Tyler Levanduski also made the top ten for the recurve cadet men.
For the masters' divisions, Thomas and Kathleen Stevenson were the top qualifiers for the men and women's recurve competitions. Kenneth Wesley Wilhelm and Bonnie Haaseth were second in each respective category while the U.S.'s Alexander Bernard Wong ranked sixth. Mike Perrego qualified fourth for the compound men while Marcia Falks qualified third for the women.
