ULAANBAATAR, Mongolia - This week starts the eleventh biannual FISU World University Archery Championships in Mongolia. The U.S. will be represented by a strong team of collegiate archers selected during the U.S. World University Championships Team Trials at the AAE Arizona Cup this past April.
The event will run similarly to a World Cup event with qualification, individual eliminations, team and mixed team eliminations, and then exciting finals matches on Sunday. There are 166 archers competing from 23 countries, and competition promises to be fierce.
Competing for the U.S. compound women are Allie Blazek of Texas A&M University, Carli Cochran, University of Southern Carolina, and Sophia Strachan, Columbia University. The recurve women's team is comprised of Madison Eich, University of Arizona, and Michelle Gilbert and Heather Koehl of Texas A&M University.
Representing the U.S. for the compound men is Garrett Abernethy, Univeristy of Southern Carolina, Paeton Keller and David McNealy, both from Northern Arizona University, while the recurve men are Jeremiah Cusick, Arizona State University, Dillon McMenamy, Farmingdale State University, and Matt Zumbo of Golden West College.
"So far the team is looking great! With two days of practice, we are all connecting really well on and off the field. It's almost kinda scary," commented Madison Eich. "The coaches are helpful when our equipment is having issues, as well as helping us gauge the wind for the afternoon. We are all having a great time and can't wait for the tournament to start!"
"All the archers are handling the new environment and the wind well," agreed Paeton Keller. "We have a strong team and cannot wait to see what qualifications bring!"
