Team USA, represented by members of the 2010 Junior United States Archery Team (USAT), has completed the ranking round of the Torneo Ciudad de Medellin, a World Ranking Event hosted by the Federacion de Arqueros de Colombia in Medellin.
Following the FITA round which was shot yesterday and today, Team USA archers have achieved two unofficial world records, with Cody Thompson (Aberdeen, NC) breaking the compound junior men's world record with a 1406; the Team USA compound junior men also had a record-breaking team ranking round with their collective score of 4151, defeating the record previously held by Denmark.
Following Thompson in this group were Jorge Jiminez (ESA), amassing 1399 points to qualify 2nd, and Nelson Torres (VEN), rounding out the top three with 1387. Team USA's Garrett Abernathy (Aiken, SC) and Josh Byerly (Crestline, OH) ended in 4th and 5th with their respective scores of 1380 and 1379; Levi Cyr (Falmouth, ME) finished the round in the 9th place position with a 1366.
The compound women were led by Isabel Serna (COL), who shot a 1363 to qualify 1st; she was followed by Natalia Londono (COL), shooting a 1349 for 2nd, and Team USA's Elizabeth Sweet (Midway City, CA), who shot a 1345 to finish in 3rd. USA's Carli Cochran (Quarryville, PA) shot a 1307 to end her qualifying round in 7th.
Several other U.S. archers saw success during the FITA round, with Miranda Leek (Des Moines, IA) qualifying second in the women's recurve category with a 1313. The category was led by Berengere Schuh (FRA), shooting a 1330; qualifying in the third position was Ana Maria Rendon (COL), scoring a 1310. Other Team USA members included Emily Blake (Colchester, VT), finishing in 11th with a 1242; Holly Stover (Brighton, MI), in 12th, shooting a 1210, and Lauren Hughes (Port Orchard, WA), ending in 14th with 1177 points.
The recurve men's group was led by the team from France, with Romain Girouille, Jean Charles Valladont and Sebastian Flute leading the charge, shooting 1315, 1311 and 1277, respectively. Forrest Blakley (Cobden, IL) was the top archer from Team USA, shooting a 1261 to qualify 5th; Peter Kelchner (Albuquerque, NM) followed in 7th with a 1250, while Josh Smith (Riverside, CA) rounded out the group, qualifying 9th with a 1234.
Thompson, who led the compound men's category at 70, 50 and 30 meters, also shot a perfect 360 at his shortest distance to finish the qualifying round. "I'm very pleased to have achieved a new world record," explained Thompson, in an interview with Federacion de Arqueros de Colombia. "This is the result of nine years of hard work. I'm also very happy with the record our team set together, which is the result of two years of intense work as a team."
The event continues on Monday with the start of Olympic Round competition, which will run through Tuesday, December 6. Team rounds, through the finals, will be shot on Wednesday, December 8.
