Time to reset and prepare for the Olympic Games after World Cup Stage 3 in Turkey

ANTALYA, Turkey – After a hectic few months, the USA’s archers will return from the Hyundai Archery World Cup Stage 3 in Turkey and while some will ready themselves for the upcoming national events, there will be others turning their attention to the Olympic Games in Paris.

Among that group heading to the Games next month will be recurve archers Casey Kaufhold, Catalina GNoriega and Brady Ellison, who were all involved in Turkey on Friday.

Kaufhold defeated Tatiana Andreoli (ITA) 6-2 in her opening match, before falling by the same score to Yasna Pourmahani (IRI). It was the same story for Jack Williams. He got past Dashnamjil Dorjsuren (MGL) 6-2 before losing to top seed Wooseok Kim (KOR), also 6-2.

GNoriega also lost to Korean opposition, in the form of Suhyeon Nam, while Ellison was edged in a one arrow shoot-off by Pit Klein (LUX).

There was mixed team competition on Friday. Ellison and Kaufhold had a bye to the 1/8 round where they lost to Japan 5-3. Over on the compound side, Carson Krahe and James Lutz were narrowly beaten 157-155 by Great Britain, who will contest the gold medal match on Saturday.

Individual elimination matches in the compound division took place on Thursday, where Alexis Ruiz won through to the 1/8 round before a 149-147 to rival Sara Lopez (COL). Oliva Dean and Carson Krahe both came through their opening encounters, only to go out at the 1/16 stage.

In the men’s event, both Lutz and Sawyer Sullivan enjoyed two wins before their run was ended by a single point loss. Lutz went out after a 149-148 defeat to Nico Wiener (AUT), while Sullivan succumbed 146-145 to Josef Bozansky (SVK). Lutz had posted consecutive scores of 149 in his opening two matches.

The recurve men’s team of Ellison, Williams and Trenton Cowles finished sixth. A shoot-off decided the recurve women’s fate in their match with the Netherlands. That trio of GNoriega, Kaufhold and Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez will gather in Paris next month to represent the USA at the Olympic Games. Elsewhere, the compound women of Dean, Krahe and Ruiz went out to Estonia, who will contest the gold medal match.
