YECHEON, Korea - USA archers delivered a strong showing during compound qualification on day one of the Hyundai Archery World Cup Stage 2 in Korea, which included having three men among the top 10.
Dressed to impress, the trio of Sawyer Sullivan, James Lutz and Kris Schaff certainly did that, combining for 2,139 points, which was just one point shy of the world record set by Lutz, Sullivan and Braden Gellenthien in Turkey last year.
Sullivan’s individual score of 716 means he will begin elimination rounds on Thursday as the third seed. He was one point behind top seed Mathias Fullerton (DEN) and level with second seed Mike Schloesser (NED).
Lutz posted a score of 712, Schaff 711 and Nick Kappers 709. Lutz is eighth seed, Schaff 10th and Kappers 14th.
Sullivan, who took gold last weekend in the compound men at the 2024 USA Archery Collegiate Target Nationals in Statesboro, Ga., has a bye to the 1/16 round, where he awaits the winner of Brandon Hawes (AUS) and Seunghyun Park (KOR).
The other three compound men begin a round earlier. Lutz meets Hoo Sam Patrick Lee (HKG), Schaff plays Trung Chien Nguyen (VIE) and Kappers faces Alon Yuan Jucatan (PHI).
Team eliminations take place on Wednesday. Sullivan, Lutz and Schaff enter at the quarterfinal stage, and will meet either the Netherlands or Italy.
Sullivan’s score of 716, combined with that of Oliva Dean in compound women, resulted in a new mixed team U21 world record of 1,419, beating the previous best by six points.
Dean, who has won the first two USAT Qualifier Series Events of the year – the AAE Arizona Cup and Easton Foundations Gator Cup – scored 703 to sit 11th after qualification. Ten points separated the top 17 archers, with Carson Krahe sitting 16th with 701.
Alexis Ruiz scored 699 and is the 16th seed, with Cassidy Cox managing 689 for 27th. The compound women’s team of Dean, Krahe and Ruiz are seeded three and also have a bye to the quarterfinals, which will be against Estonia.
In the individual competition, Dean and Krahe have byes to the 1/16 round of eliminations, taking place on Thursday. Dean’s opponent will be Georgina Graham (AUS) or Paola Ramirez Gonzalez (PUR). Krahe will face Elisa Roner (ITA).
Ruiz and Cox begin at the 1/32 round, against Binderiya Orkhon (MGL) and Pham Ngoc Anh Le (VIE).
Dean and Sullivan are number two seeds in the compound mixed team, with elimination matches on Friday. The USA tackles Australia at the 1/8 round.
Day two in Korea begins with team eliminations, all the way through the bronze medal matches, with recurve archers stepping into the arena on Wednesday afternoon.
