DUBLIN, Ohio – The first full day of the 2024 Rebel Gear Buckeye Classic involved qualification rounds for the U18 and U21 archers, followed by official practice for the rest of the field.
Compound U18 men has the top three from qualification all sitting on the same score. Dewey Hathaway is number one seed due to shooting more X’s than Jacob Merkel and Caleb Qiocho. Brody Wonch is fourth seed after firing 692.
Erin Flores put in a strong display to emerge as the number one seed in recurve U21 women, notching a score of 620, nine points clear of second seed Charvika Gopi.
Three points separated the top four archers in recurve U18 men, with Jin Kang (660) leading a group which included Matthew Parmenter (659), Carson Chan (658) and Aarya Arun (657).
Compound U21 women was even tighter. Two points separated the top four. Brianna Laux scored 671, with three following on 669 – Sierra Sands, Zoie Thompson and Lanie Nish.
Owen Frohmader pushed past 700 to top qualification in the compound U21 men. His score of 702 was seven points better than Landen Witmer and 15 clear of Landyn Cox. In compound U18 women, Taylor Miller, Jacey Cypriano and Julia Cook filled the top three places.
Barebow U21 women was another closely contested qualification. The top two seeds, Kelly Hawvermale and Anastacia Godman were split by one point. Things were a little more cut and dried in the other three barebow divisions. Ethan Mitchell finished 43 points ahead of the field in the U21 men; Luke Thornsbury was 47 clear in the U18 men, with Ava Jones 38 ahead of second seed Christine Cook in U18 women.
Local hopeful Hunter Stevens dominated qualification in the fixed pins U21 men. His score of 676 was 60 points better than Cammie Kitchens. Leila Crawford (fixed pins U21 women), David Fightmaster (fixed pins U18 women) and Audrey Overton (fixed pins U18 women) set the standard going into eliminations on Saturday.
Medalists from last week’s WIAWIS JOAD Target Nationals & JOAD U.S. Open are among the frontrunners after qualification in recurve U18 women, which has Danica Morissette as its number one seed, followed by Ye-eun Whang and Hailey Franzone.
Patrick Nielsen is the man to catch in a 36-strong recurve U21 men. His score of 629 in qualification put him ahead of Kurtis Ng (625) and Cameron Senay (621).
Qualification for seniors and masters will kickstart Saturday’s program, followed in the afternoon by U18 and U21 elimination and medal matches.
The senior gold medal matches in compound, barebow and recurve will be broadcast live on USA Archery’s Facebook and You Tube channel from 2pm ET on Sunday.
