MEDELLIN, Colombia – USA Archery has several top talents competing in Colombia this week for the last chance qualifier for the 2022 World Games. The next edition of this prestigious international multi-sport championship is set to take place in Birmingham, Alabama, and as the host nation, USA Archery is looking to make a strong showing.
Recurve and barebow archers will compete in field events, but the compound archers have an elite target archery competition as only 100 athletes are included across all divisions. The USA is awarded one male and one female slot, and one para athlete slot through host allocation, but can earn one additional quota place each for the men and women with a top three finish at the last chance qualifier shoot this Saturday.
Kris Schaff ranked first for both the last chance qualifier and for the Medellin World Ranking Event today with a stellar 713. “The round went great,” he commented. “The first end of score it was pouring rain (the most rain I’ve seen ever come down in a 10-minute period) and I gave up 2 trying to battle seeing my black dot in my lens with all the rain drops. Then the rain quit, and it was the best weather I’ve shot in on an international level. With this 713 it beats my highest qualifying score by 4 points, so I am really happy with how my equipment and I performed today.”
James Lutz, who recently won team gold with Schaff at the World Archery Championships, ranked 5th for both events with a 707. Coming off a team bronze finish at the World Archery Championships, teammates Savannah Vanderwier and Makenna Proctor seeded 2nd and 3rd respectively for the last chance qualifier with 686 and 685, ranking them 7th and 8th for the world ranking event.
Several USA Archers are also competing in Colombia to earn world ranking points, international event experience and to represent our nation on the world stage. With notable top ten finishes today, Gabriel Anderson and Josef Scarboro ranked 6th and 7th for the recurve men and Michelle Ahn, Rachel Reshonsky and Olivia Martin qualified 3rd, 5th and 7th for the recurve women. Anderson and Ahn are seeded 2nd for the recurve mixed team event behind host, Colombia.
USA is also sitting in 2nd behind Colombia for the compound mixed team competition. USA archers will also shoot in the compound men’s team event, the only official team competition this week, ranked 2nd behind Colombia.
Competition continues tomorrow with team and mixed team competition through medal matches, followed by a special elimination round just for juniors. Individual matches for the World Ranking Event will run Friday through the semifinals, with finals on Sunday. Individual matches for the Last Chance Qualifier will be contested Saturday through semifinals with medal matches Sunday morning. Complete results from the competition are available on Ianseo.
