LAC LA BICHE, Canada. – Of the 12 individual divisions compering at the World Archery Field Championships, an archer from the USA is top seed in three of them after two days of qualification.
Brady Ellison was 38 points clear of his nearest rival in the recurve men. Defending champion Paige Pearce finished top of a strong compound women competition, while Dewey Hathaway topped compound U21 men by just one point from Fabrizio Aloisi (ITA).
Ellison faces Alex Smith (AUS) when eliminations get underway on Thursday. He could face teammate Alex Gilliam if both win their openers. Pearce will begin against home hopeful Andrea Wiens (CAN), with Hathaway tackling another Canadian in Trevor Hoy.
Elsewhere, Fawn Girard (pictured) – leading after the first day of qualification – is second seed in barebow women. She meets Casandra Campo Tellez (ESP) in the 1/8 round on Thursday afternoon. Two other US archers, Maggie Brensinger and Diane Cochran, the 12th and 13th seeds respectively – will meet in the quarterfinals if they come through their opening elimination matches.
Rendyn Brooks was the leading one of three USA archers in compound U21 women. She finished second and receives a bye to the semifinals, where she will play either Isabella Bruguier (GBR) or Jaqueline Ringstrom (SWE). Anna Shearier and Lilie Aguilar face one another in the quarterfinals. The winner takes on top seed Giulia Di Nardo (ITA).
Alex Zuletta-Visser will represent the USA in the elimination rounds of the recurve women after finishing seventh following qualification. Her opening match on Thursday will be against Aurélie Autret (FRA).
Matt Nofel claimed silver at this event two years ago. He is fourth seed, posting the same score as third seed Florian Unruh (GER), half of the mixed team which claimed silver at the Olympic Games in Paris. Nofel begins eliminations against Florent Mulot (FRA).
Hailey Franzone and Abigail Kippes have both got byes to the quarterfinals of the recurve U21 women. Franzone faces either Audrey Khan Arevalo (CAN) or Lea Malkova (SVK), with Kippes awaiting the winner of Lily Brislen (NZL) versus Tereza Veverkova (CZE). Rubie Chambers starts at the 1/8 round against Monika Tovarnicka (CZE).
In recurve U21 men, Ashton Probus, the fifth seed, takes on fourth seed Daniel Medveczky (CZE) in the quarterfinals. Jack Trolia and Chap Post start a round earlier.
Follow along with all the latest scores and results. Individual elimination matches take place on Thursday and team/mixed team eliminations on Friday. There are 10 divisions within the team/mixed competition. The mixed team event takes the top man and top woman from each division. The team is made up of the top archer from each discipline – barebow, compound and recurve – with a separate men’s and women’s competition.
The USA has the number one seed in recurve men’s team, recurve mixed team and compound mixed team.
