MOKRICE, Slovenia – Within the grounds of a medieval castle, a 24-strong USA team has gathered to compete in the 2024 World Archery 3D Championships.
Mokrice Castle dates back to the 15th Century and has housed generations of European nobility. These days it is used as a hotel. There is also a golf course which weaves its way within the wooded surrounds.
And it is against this backdrop that 307 archers from 31 nations will come together in the east of Slovenia, close to the border with Croatia for six days of competition. Four disciplines will be in action – barebow, compound, longbow and traditional.
A number of USA archers have World 3D experience under their belts, among them Shiloh Butts (pictured), who won bronze in longbow men when the event was last held, in Italy two years ago.
Returning to the team, having represented in 2022, are Stephanie Correa (traditional women), Joella Bates (longbow women), Gracelyn Chambers (compound women) and Archie Nixon (traditional men).
Kari Caulfield (barebow women) is on the team after qualifying with the best score at the trials event in June in what was her first-ever 3D tournament.
The youngest archer in USA colors is Abbie Aguilar, competing in compound women. She is just 15 years of age, and the younger sister of Lilie Aguilar who finished fourth in compound women at the World Field Championships in Canada earlier this month.
Aguilar is not the only teenager among the USA's 24 archers in Mokrice. Others include Riley Adams (16), Madison Ritter – who will be 18 on Thursday - and Kaden Ward (17).
Official practice takes place on Monday, before two days of qualification. Elimination rounds begin with team competition on Thursday. The event runs until next Sunday.
