SHANGHAI, China – Brady Ellison and Kris Schaff will return home to prepare for next month’s SoCal Showdown in Chula Vista, CA, after both narrowly missed out on a push for podium places at the World Cup Stage 2 in China.
Ellison, who qualified as the number one seed in the recurve men, was beaten 6-4 by Steven Wijler of the Netherlands at the quarterfinals stage. He had earlier notched a 10+ to get past Alex Wise in his opening elimination match, before convincing wins over Ryan Tyack (7-1) of Australia and Shaoxuan Wei (6-0) of China.
Schaff was agonizingly defeated by Korea’s Jaewon Yang in the last eight of the compound men. Both archers posted scores of 148, with Schaff then scoring 10 in the one arrow shoot-off, only for Yang to get a little closer to edge victory.
The 30-year-old Schaff registered scores of 149, 148, 148 in his three elimination matches, with Yang going on to claim the bronze on Saturday.
There are four World Cup stages, before the final in Mexico in September. As well as Turkey and China, there are also stages in Colombia and France.
Stage 3: Medellin, Colombia – June 13-18
Stage 4: Paris, France – August 15-20
Final: Hermosillo, Mexico – September 9-10
* Registration remains opens for the SoCal Showdown until May 26. The SoCal Showdown takes place in Chula Vista from June 9-11. It is the third of four events in the United States Archery Team (USAT) Qualifier Series. The final event is the Buckeye Classic in Dublin, OH, from July 28-30.
