Santiago, Chile – The excitement continues at the 2022 Pan Am and Para Pan Am Championships and today was a big day for Team USA Archery. Barebow Men’s Team won gold. Barebow Women won gold. Recurve Men and Compound Women took bronze. Recurve Women and Compound Men earned entrance into the Gold Medal Final this weekend. And our recurve and compound teams earned quota spots for the 2023 Pan Am Games. That’s a lot so let’s break it down.
The day started with Barebow Men’s Team taking gold over Argentina. Marcus Cooley, Rick Stonebraker and Matt Yacca make up the USA Barebow Men’s Team and are now World Record holders as well.
Barebow continued its gold streak with USA Barebow Women’s Team consisting of Maggie Brensinger, Fawn Girard, and Christina Lyons, clinching gold against Brazil.
Next, Joonsuh Oh, Matthew Requa, and Jack Williams took on the home team of Chile to win bronze for the USA Recurve Men’s Team and earning quota spots. Matthew Requa commented during practice, “It’s always a battle between Colombia, Mexico, and Canada. So, team rounds should be fun! They all are shooting well, some tough matches ahead.” And boy was he right, Colombia and Mexico vie for gold on Saturday.
The USA Compound Women’s Team beat El Salvador in a tight match 234-230. Cassidy Cox, Paige Pearce, and Alexis Ruiz had tough competition heading into the final match. USA beat Brazil 229 to 226 to finally see bronze and earn quota spots for the Pan Am Games in 2023.
Alexis Ruiz commented, “I’m very excited to be in Santiago, Chile. It’s my first international event in a while because of nursing school.” Regarding being a part of the USA Compound Women’s Team, “It’s always great to be a part of Team USA. We always work together and are supportive of each other to ensure everyone has a great tournament. I’m excited to earn our spots for the Pan Am Games.”
USA Recurve Women’s Team will compete for gold against Mexico on Saturday, November 26th and Compound Men’s Team head to their finals match against Colombia on Sunday. Both teams earned quota spots for the Pan Am Games with their performances.
Team USA Archery earned their spots for the 2023 Pan Am Games which is an Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Paris 2024.
Para athletes are halfway through their qualifications and will head into finals matches starting on Thanksgiving Day. So far, USA Recurve Men Open has Paralympic Gold Medalist Kevin Mather ranked 1st, Eric Bennett has secured 6th, and Michael Lukow is ranked 8th. USA Recurve Open Women has Candice Caesar ranked 3rd and Valeria Duron ranked 7th. Recurve Women’s Open Doubles Team Candice Caesar and Valeria Duron is ranked 3rd.
USA Compound Men Open captured 4 out of the top 12 qualification rankings and is led by former 2016 Paralympic Gold Medalist Andre Shelby in 2nd, Richard Burkett in 7th, David Cunningham in 10th, and Douglas Godfrey in 12th. Compound Men Open Doubles Team is seated 1st with Andre Shelby and Richard Burkett. USA Men W1 Open securely hold rankings 1 and 3 with Lucas Herro and Jason Tabansky, respectively. Lisa Coryell is ranked number 1 for USA Women’s W1 Open.
