COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Thanks to the generosity of the Lancaster Archery Foundation, the eight-strong USA team heading to Chengdu, China in July for the FISU World University Games will each receive a $1,000 grant.
The largest global multi-sports event for student-athletes, the World University Games will be staged over 12 days, from July 28-August 8, involving more than 10,000 student-athletes and officials from over 150 countries and regions.
“As was seen recently at the Collegiate Target Nationals, and with success at the World Cup Stage 1 earlier this year, the standard of our student-athlete archers has never been stronger,” said USA Archery CEO Rod Menzer.
“USA Archery is grateful to the Lancaster Archery Foundation, whose generous support helps to offer our archers international experience that will only make them even better.”
The eight archers representing the United States are: Natalie Howell, Katherine Wu, Judith Gottlieb (recurve women); Chris Austin (recurve men); Sachiko Keane, Alyssa Tenney, Alyssa Sturgill (compound women); Ellisei Miller (compound men).
“It has been an honor for the Lancaster Archery Foundation to be able to assist our collegiate athletes as they travel internationally to represent the United States," said Dale Brubaker, Grants Coordinator with Lancaster Archery Foundation.
"With this year’s event taking place in China, helping to alleviate some of the travel costs for the athletes will allow them to focus on the competition even more.”
The archery events of the Chengdu 2021 FISU Games will be held at the Modern Pentathlon Centre Equestrian Arena in Chengdu from July 27-31, with a total of 10 gold medals up for grabs. Archery and water polo are the only two sports starting a day before the opening ceremony.
Archery is one of the 15 compulsory sports represented at the World University Games, with up to three optional sports. The event will be broadcast to a global audience of over 300 million viewers.
The Games were originally scheduled for the summer of 2021 but ultimately pushed back until 2023 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
