ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Four divisions returned on Sunday morning to complete their 2024 WIAWIS USA Archery JOAD U.S. Open, after inclement weather curtailed competition on Saturday afternoon, before team rounds brought down the curtain on what was an outstanding first visit to Albuquerque.
Trailing 4-2 overnight, Eunice Choi posted two scores of 27 to defeat Laurel Anderson 6-4 in the recurve U21 women gold medal match. Bronze was claimed by Sarah Gardner.
Top seed Ye-eun Whang took control of the recurve U18 women’s gold medal encounter with Olivia Chang. The pair were level at 3-3 when play was halted on Saturday. Whang took the honors with a 7-3 victory. In similar fashion, Alice S. Lee – the 13th seed – overcame Ryann Hempleman 7-3 to win bronze. They were also tied at 3-3 before resumption.
Yeshaswini Tati justified her number one seeding with a 6-0 win over Siwoo Cheong in the recurve U15 women gold medal match. Paige Lee, another top seed, won recurve U13 women, defeating Aadya Navda 6-2. Kao Yung Hsien claimed bronze.
The compound U18 men split their medals, as previous travel plans meant most were unable to return for Sunday’s play. Dewey Hathaway and Jacob Merkel share gold, with Jacob McArthur and Caleb Quiocho sharing the bronze.
Team rounds wrapped up a hugely successful 2024 WIAWIS USA Archery JOAD Target Nationals & JOAD U.S. Open, providing a fitting end to the event. Team names such as Plum Puppies, Amber Wallabies, Salmon Cockroaches, Sky Ducklings and Raspberry Koalas brought energy, excitement and fun, against the backdrop of vocal support from family and friends.
Albuquerque will again host the WIAWIS USA Archery JOAD Target Nationals & JOAD U.S. Open, with the 2025 edition returning to Balloon Fiesta Park from July 16-20.
