Some of the best and brightest talent returns to Georgia for Collegiate Target Nationals

STATESBORO, Ga. – The great and the good from the collegiate world have gathered in southern Georgia for the 2024 USA Archery Collegiate Target Nationals, which return to Georgia Southern University starting on Friday morning.

Defending champions University of the Cumberlands are again the team to beat but rivals Texas A&M University have been talking in confident tones ahead of competition. Such is the talent on display in the coming days, that two Texas A&M archers, Carson Krahe and Sawyer Sullivan, will race to Atlanta airport on Saturday night to catch a direct flight to Korea for World Cup Stage #2.

Meanwhile, teammate Trenton Cowles will be eager to continue the form which saw him finish second in the Olympic Trials earlier this week in Newberry, Fla. Texas A&M also include Alex Gilliam and Riley Marx, who were both among the top eight at Olympic Trials.

There are individual defending champions returning to Georgia Southern. These include Micheal Plummer (Mount Marty University), winner of recurve men last year, and Kyle Coffey (Union College), who was triumphant in barebow men 12 months ago.

Elsewhere, Marissa Harding (University of the Cumberlands) is back to try and retain the compound women’s title, with Britney McCarthy (Lindsey Wilson College) hoping to keep hold of the barebow women’s crown claimed in 2023. Another University of the Cumberlands champion from last year, Kimber Wheeler, is back to fight for her fixed pins women title, also.

Official practice took place on Thursday. The gentle breeze eased the challenge of the humidity. Practice was then followed by the official opening ceremony, a colorful affair during which the sense of occasion was apparent, setting the stage for an exciting three days of top-level archery.

Injury prevents 2023 world youth champion Sydney Sullenberger (Columbia University) from competing this year, though she will be part of the broadcast team for a double header on Sunday, starting with the individual gold medal matches from 8am EDT. These will be followed at 3pm by the mixed team medal matches. Both can be found on USA Archery’s Facebook and YouTube channels.

Latest scores and results can be found on Between Ends, with action photos uploaded each day at the end of each session.
