Para recurve duo Caesar and Sternfeld chasing bronze in the Czech Republic

NOVE MESTO, Czech Republic – Candice Caesar and Karen Sternfeld are into the bronze medal match of the recurve women open doubles at the Para-Archery World Ranking Event, where they will face Iran on Friday.

The US pairing came through their opening match on Wednesday, battling back in the fourth end to force – and win – a shoot-off against fourth seeds Italy. Top seeds Indian proved too strong in the semifinals, setting up a meeting with Iran for bronze. There is live coverage of the doubles finals on Friday.

Eric Bennett and Kevin Mather combined in the recurve men open doubles. After seeing off Georgia 6-0, they then lost out to China 5-1.

“Dominated our first match and lost in the quarter finals,” Bennett wrote in a Facebook post. “Kevin Mather and I both shot probably the best we’ve shot as a team but ran into buzzsaw in the #2 ranked Chinese team.”

Ben Thompson will resume his push for success on Thursday when he tackles Rakesh Kumar (IND) in the quarterfinals of the compound men open.

The 2019 World Para Archery Championship gold medalist battled through two rounds on Wednesday, defeating Adrian Martinez Torre (ESP) 145-139, then overcoming Ivan Dziadyk (UKR) 144-138. Dziadyk had toppled top seed Ken Swagumilang (INA) in the previous round.

Jason Tabansky also has a quarterfinal match awaiting him on Thursday after a 128-123 victory over Kohji Oyama (JPN). He will next face number one seed Tianxin Zhan (CHN).

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Bennett made it to the 1/8 round in recurve men open before succumbing 6-2 to third seed Gholamreza Rahimi (IRI). Bennett, who is due to represent the USA at a fifth Paralympic Games later this summer, had earlier beaten Vaclav Kostal (CZE) 7-3.

Mather – the Paralympic gold medalist from Tokyo three years ago – had come through his opening match on Tuesday, as had Michael Lukow. Both fell at the 1/16 stage to Giorgi Managadze (GEO) and Lixue Zhao (CHN) respectively.

On the women’s side, there were 1/16 exits for Caesar and Sternfeld in the recurve women open, as well as for Wendy Gardner in the compound women open.
