USA Archery’s Achievement Award Program is designed to celebrate the accomplishments of archers of all ages and abilities as they progress in the sport from the most beginner to incredibly advanced levels of success. The JOAD Olympian and Adult Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards mark the highest of those achievements and USA Archery is proud to congratulate many archers on their achievements this spring.
Olympic Medalist (‘84, ‘88) and multiple-time World Champion Rick McKinney joined his archers in a 12-week indoor league for the JOAD and Adult programs at Timber Mesa Archery Club to prepare for Indoor Nationals and state championship events. McKinney shared: “I decided to shoot with them to encourage them and show that even an old guy like me can shoot and have fun while trying to earn pins. Each week they had to shoot with a different person so that they would learn to shoot with different people.
“We set up teams so that it was important to encourage your teammate to do well in order to win. The age variance was from 10 to 67. Most of the adults are very instrumental in encouraging the kids to learn how to score, call arrows and make sure the entries are accurate. Thus, more of a learning moment. After the league we had a banquet where we highlighted all of the many accomplishments. The goal is to make sure the kids and parents enjoy the experience so that they will continue to shoot archery, making it a lifetime sport.”
McKinney, while famed for his recurve shooting, earned his bronze adult award with a compound bow: “I did it on a whim and to see if I could earn the pins like anybody else. Next year I have promised one of the kids I will shoot barebow with them! I have shot a compound in one shape or another since the mid-1970's, the same as I have shot barebow during that time as well. I have shot in Vegas with a compound and Outdoor Nationals with a compound. This was after my competitive years shooting recurve. However, since my family owned archery lanes in the 1970's I have played around with all types of equipment. I can even shoot left-handed and behind my back! Just for fun though!”
These awards are part of the USA Archery Achievement Program, which provides achievement award pins for progressive scoring achievements, and encourages youth and adult archers to accomplish goals in the sport of archery.
In addition to a certificate and pin, Bronze JOAD Olympian awards are recognized with a backpack, Silver JOAD Olympian awards are recognized with a lightweight jacket, and Gold JOAD Olympian awards are recognized with a belt buckle.
