ANTALYA, Turkey – The recurve men’s trio of Brady Ellison, Jack Williams and Trenton Cowles begin their final push for a team quota slot at the Olympic Games when they face Luxembourg on Thursday at the Hyundai Archery World Cup Stage 3.
Ellison, Williams and Cowles (pictured below) are the ninth seeds, whereas Luxembourg are 24th. A win for the USA would set them up against Italy (8th) in the 1/8 round, with top seeds Korea a possible opponent in the quarterfinals.
With two team slots available via world rankings – as they will be after this event – the USA is needing to make up ground on China, who began the week three places and 29 ranking points ahead. China are second seeds after individual qualification and await the winners of Turkey and Slovenia in the 1/8 round.
Ellison will face Luxembourg opposition in his opening match of the individual eliminations, when meeting Pit Klein. Ellison shot 682 on Wednesday, making him the seventh seed. Williams tackles Dashnamjil Dorjsuren (MGL) at the start of Friday’s eliminations. The SoCal Showdown winner fired 667 and is the 33rd seed. Victory would likely set him up against top seed Wooseok Lee (KOR) in the 1/16 round.
World number one Casey Kaufhold starts against Tatiana Andreoli (ITA) on Friday. The 20-year-old is 14th seed after firing 657 during qualification. Two wins for both Kaufhold and Catalina GNoriega would set up an all-American meeting in the 1/8 round. GNoriega plays against Suhyeon Nam (KOR) in her opening match.
The recurve women’s team, which also includes Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez, meets the Netherlands in their opening match on Thursday. India, the fifth seeds, await the winner in the 1/8 round.
Kaufhold and Ellison are fifth seeds in the recurve mixed team. They combine to take on the winner from Malaysia versus Japan when mixed team eliminations take place on Friday.
On the compound side, Carson Krahe and James Lutz make up the mixed team. They also begin their push for the podium on Friday, starting with a meeting against the winners from Great Britain versus the Philippines.
Lutz and Sawyer Sullivan both registered the same score (709), to finish as sixth and seventh seed after qualification. Lutz opens against Viktor Orosz (HUN) when elimination matches start on Thursday, while Sullivan – a triple gold medalist at World Cup Stage 2 – takes on Robin Jaatma (EST).
In the compound women, Krahe – the leading USA archer after qualification – will start elimination rounds against Natacha Stutz (DEN). Elsewhere, Olivia Dean faces Larissa Aparecida Ferrari Oliveira (BRA), with Alexis Ruiz meeting Maris Tetsmann (EST). The compound women finished seventh in the team competition earlier on Wednesday.
