Another USAT Qualifier Series record as Gator Cup numbers climb

NEWBERRY, Fla. – Registration closed on Friday for next month’s Gator Cup, the second event in the USAT Qualifier Series, and the Easton Newberry Sports Complex is readying itself for record numbers.

There were 649 archers competing in northern Florida last year. This year, there will be almost 100 more for the event, which takes place just 16 miles west of Gainesville between May 12-14.

Gator Cup has enjoyed considerable growth from when it began in 2010 with 130 archers. By 2013, that number had leapt to 310. Ten years on, and more than 700 will converge on the multi-sport complex in Newberry. The increased numbers follows record-setting entrants for the Arizona Cup, which attracted almost 800 archers.

Categories competing in the Sunshine State include recurve, compound, barebow and fixed pins. All but fixed pins will involve men, women, masters, senior, U21 and U18 divisions. There will be no senior or master division in fixed pins.

The Easton Newberry Sports Complex will also host the final two stages of the 2023 World Archery Championships/2023 Pan Am Games Recurve and Compound trial events. These will take place over May 10-11, before Gator Cup gets underway.

There will also be trial events for the 2023 World Archery Para Championships/2023 Parapan Am Games. Stage 2 will take place in conjunction with Gator Cup. Stage 3 will take place following the USAT Series event, on Sunday afternoon.

As was the case for Arizona Cup, the gold medal matches in the men’s and women’s division will be on the Saturday morning, to consider the travel needs for those competing in the Archery World Cup Stage 2 in Shanghai, China from May 16-21. The U21 gold medal matches in compound and recurve will again be streamed live on USA Archery's YouTube channel.

There are two remaining USAT Qualifier Series events to come after Gator Cup. These are the SoCal Showdown in Chula Vista, CA, and the Buckeye Classic in Dublin, OH.
