CHULA VISTA, Calif. - With record-breaking attendance at the 2013 Flexor SoCal Showdown, the fourth and final USAT Qualifier Series Event, there was an incredible amount of talent on the field. Many young archers shot side by side with more experienced competitors during the qualification round today. Windy conditions, especially in the second half, caused massive gaps in point totals and showed the skills of America's top archers.
For cadet and junior archers, the top eight archers per category will advance to the round robin match play of the World Archery Youth Championships - U.S. Team Trials.
For cadet recurve men, Colin Klimitichek took gold, followed by Gabriel Perez from Baja, and Andrew Mateo finished with the bronze medal. Joining Klimiticheck and Mateo in the trials will be Geun Woo Kim, Dillon McMenamy, Joshua Moskow, Kent Nitta, Ralph Lawton, and Jake Ohlendorf.
On the compound field Tyson Pruitte finished first, followed by Christopher Bee and Hayden Eilinger, all of whom claim spots on the podium. Close behind were Matthew Menke, Corey Wright, Justin Dixon, Will Raper, and Gabriel Orihuela.
Lauren Clamon clinched gold for the female cadet recurve division. Rebecca Marquez of Baja took silver and Anna Miscione finished third for bronze. Paige Hill, Jenna Ahn, Eliana Claps, Stephanie Kim, Amanda Tamayo, and Karissa Yamaguchi will join the US podium finishers for Monday's round robin matches.
Danielle Reynolds finished with gold for the compound cadet women, just ahead of Sonia Taniguchi and Emily Fischer. Allie Blazek, Angelica Ramirez, Gabrielle Cyr, Allie Canaday and Carolina Estrada also made the cut for the trials event.
Kailey Johnston shot steadily all day to rank first for the junior compound women, just over Paige Pearce and Kayleigh Rogers. Also heading to Monday's round robins will be Lexi Keller, Emily Bee, Brogan Williams, Hunter Jackson and Kannsas Michaels.
On the junior men's
side, rising star Bridger Deaton finished first well ahead of the rest of his
division. Danny Button, Steven Manfull, Alex Wilfer, DJ Hunt, Evan Zak, Hunter
Martin and Charlie Weinstein finished well enough to make the cut for the team trials event.
Matt Zumbo, Jeremiah Cusick, Daniel McLaughlin, Sean McLaughlin, Matt Twombly, Benjamin Chu, Zachary Garret and Daniel Cunningham will compete for spots on the World Archery Youth Championships team as recurve junior men.
Recurve junior females Mackenzie Brown, Ariel Gibilaro, Elizabeth Caughell, LaNola Pritchard, Alexis Drake, Katie Alexander, Madison Eich, and Lauren Meyer will also battle to make the team.
Moving into elimination matches tomorrow, the juniors will be combined with the seniors to fight for champion titles and prize money. Brady Ellison was on top of the men's recurve division for most of the day and finished first, followed by Jake Kaminski, Joe Fanchin, and Nick Kale. Khatuna Lorig fought hard to qualify first for the female recurve women but finished with a solid lead over Miranda Leek, Gabriela Bayardo of Mexico and Michelle Gilbert.
Reo Wilde had a solid victory in the compound men's group, qualifying first ahead of Tim Gillingham and Braden Gellenthien, while Jamie Van Natta kept her hold on first in the compound women's category throughout the day. Other top qualifiers were Erika Jones, Carli Cochran and Sarah Lance.
