The team of young archers who will represent the United States at the World Archery Youth Championships has been chosen, following a very intense day of round robin match play competition. The twelve archers who have been selected will travel to Legnica, Poland for the Championships, which begin August 22.
Initially, the top eight cadet and junior archers in each category, from the qualification round at Easton JOAD Nationals, were selected to compete in the Trials event, held yesterday at Discovery Park in Sacramento, Calif. Those thirty two archers then proceeded to compete in matches against each other archer in their category for one of three spots on the World Archery Youth Championships Team.
For the recurve cadet men, it will be JOAD Grand National Champion Matthew Zumbo (Fountain Valley, CA), Alex Wifler (Crete, IL) and Junior Dream Team member Eliot Simon (Sayville, NY) who will travel to Poland for the United States. Fellow Junior Dream Team members Mackenzie Brown (Tyler, TX), Lauren Clamon (San Diego, CA) and Michelle Gilbert (Bethesda, MD) will join them for the recurve cadet women's team.
The recurve junior women's team will feature Resident Athlete Holly Stover (Brighton, MI), Katie Alexander (Loomis, CA) and Miranda Leek (Des Moines, (IA). Leek previously qualified for the junior team by earning a berth to the World Archery Championships (senior) Team earlier this year. On the men's side, Resident Athlete Peter Kelchner (Albuquerque, NM) will be joined in Poland by Junior Dream Team archer Daniel McLaughlin (West Chester, OH) and fellow Resident Athlete Josh Smith (Riverside, CA).
For the compound teams, the cadet men's team will consist of Cadet USAT member Riley Whiting (Cove, UT), Danny Button, and fellow Cadet USAT member Bridger Deaton (Otley, IA), while Junior USAT member Paige Pearce (Red Bluff, CA), Emily Fischer (Corpus Christi, TX) and Kannsas Michaels (Murrysville, PA) will comprise the compound cadet women's team.
Garrett Abernathy (Aiken, SC), also a Junior USAT member, placed first in team selection for the compound junior men's team, followed by Ben Cleland (Swanton, OH) and Aaron Groce (Macon, GA). For the compound junior women, the United States will be represented by Carli Cochran (Willow Street, PA), Sara Lance (Wyandotte, MI) and Kendal Nicely (Gorham, ME). All members of the compound junior women's team are also members of the United States Archery Team.
