DUBLIN, Ireland - The final day of qualification concluded today at the World Archery Field Championships with 24 targets at marked distances. With 35 U.S. archers representing a strong contingent within the record 307 total competitors, competition was exciting in a beautiful woodland course. The course was especially windy today making for challenging conditions on the field.
The two-day qualification has archers shoot at 24 targets per day, first at unmarked distances, and today, at marked distances. Archers shoot three arrows per target for a maximum of 432 points each day, 864 total. The top sixteen archers in each division advance to individual eliminations tomorrow. The top eight will continue to the second round and only four will make it to the finals this weekend.
The U.S. compound senior men swept qualification as Dave Cousins, Jesse Broadwater and Steve Anderson went 1-2-3 just a few points apart. Jamie Van Natta also claimed the top compound women's slot for the U.S. while Heather Gore also landed in the top 16, qualifying 7th. Crystal Gauvin was just out at 18th.
Reigning World Archery Field Champion Brady Ellison retained his hold on first from yesterday, finishing over 30 points ahead of the second ranked archer from Germany. Also making the cut in the senior recurve men: Olympic medalists Victor Wunderle and Jake Kaminski qualified 8th and 9th respectively.
For the senior recurve women, Heather Koehl was the top U.S. finisher, ranking 8th, while LaNola Pritchard qualified 16th and Allison Eaton just missed the cut at 22nd.
John Demmer III clinched the top spot for the barebow senior men - the only barebow archer to break 700 this week. Ben Rogers and Mark Applegate qualified 9th and 29th respectively. Jenifer Stoner made the cut to eliminations for the barebow senior women, ranking 13th, while Kim Hartman and Julie Robinson were 22nd and 26th.
The U.S. junior squad also saw great success as Sophia Strachan, Savannah Vanderwier and Cassidy Cox qualified 2nd, 3rd and 6th for the compound women, while Steven Collins and Eliiah Hughes were 4th and 5th and Braden Howes finished 20th for the compound men.
Mark Schlaudraff led the U.S. barebow junior men finishing 4th as Ryland Hartman and Wilson Watson qualified 7th and 10th. Abigail Weir and Laura Hughes were the only two U.S. entrants in the barebow junior women's division and finished 4th and 5th.
Miriam Trafford, who took the world champion title in 2014, led the recurve junior women after the first 24 targets, but finished qualification 2nd, just ahead of friends and teammates Anna Miscione and Karissa Yamaguchi who were 6th and 9th. Collin Klimitchek was the top scorer for the U.S. junior recurve men qualifying 6th while Alex Gilliam and Hardy Trafford scored 19th and 20th respectively.
