LANSING, Michigan - Following 72 arrows of qualification yesterday and round robin matches for the top eight archers in each division, USA Archery is proud to present a strong team for the World Archery Youth Championships in Rosario, Argentina this October. Archers were awarded points for placement in qualification, score, matches won, and ranking of their arrow averages to ensure a solid place will represent the USA in Argentina.
Cassidy Cox (Albuquerque, New Mexico), who has had a breakout year on the senior Archery World Cup circuit and also qualified for the senior U.S. World Archery Championships Team, made the junior compound women's team along with World Field Champion Sophia Strachan (Frederick, Maryland) and Alexis Ruiz (Glendale, Arizona). Cox commented: "It's really exciting and I'm really happy because this was my last chance to try out for the youth worlds and it means so much to me to get to go." The reigning team world champion Cox added: "I think we're going to be really strong again in team rounds." Dahlia Crook (Piedmont, Kansas) finished 4th in the Trials and will be the team alternate.
The compound junior men's team will consist of Jesse Clayton (Powell Butte, Oregon), who won the Trials outright with strong scores throughout the weekend, Kolby Hanley (Cambridge, Vermont), Curtis Broadnax (Social Circle, Georgia), and team alternate Wade McClanahan (Colome, South Dakota).
Making the cut for the recurve cadet women's team was Casey Kaufhold (Lancaster, Pennsylvania). Having just turned 13, Kaufhold was the youngest in her division by far: "I kind of feel like I don't even know what's happening. I should be a cub and there are all these 16 and 17 year olds," she commented. "I'm excited about going to Argentina; I've never been that far from home and I'm looking forward to getting to know all the girls on the team and making new friends." Kaufhold will join Inga Pever (Houston, Texas) and Amy Jung (Los Altos, California) on the team as Elizabeth Lee (San Diego, California) finished 4th as the alternate.
Jack Williams (Irvine, California) was the frontrunner for the recurve cadet men's team throughout the weekend and will lead teammates Andrew Park (Marana, Arizona) and Adam Heidt (Springfield, Georgia), who finished ahead of alternate, Trenton Cowles (Tarzana, California).
After a crazy close day of constantly shifting rankings, top qualifier Dane Johnson (Laotto, Indiana) ended in a three-way tie for the top spot for the compound cadet men with Ethan Merrill (Manchester, New Hampshire) and Anthony Ferraro (Scranton, Pennsylvania). Carson Sapp (Cairo, Georgia) was just one trials point behind, earning the alternate slot for the team.
For the compound cadet women, following strong leader Savannah Vanderwier (Sheffield, Texas), the remaining spots were incredibly close as well. Breanna Theodore (Hibbing, Minnesota) and Sachiko Keane(Staten Island, New York) sealed the final two slots on the team and Athena Caiopoulos (Irvine, California) will be the alternate.
Joony Kim (Boise, Idaho) and Matthew Nofel (Colorado Springs, Colorado) led the recurve junior men's competition, each finishing with a strong 20 trials points and will be joined by teammate Alex Bourdage (Rosemount, Minnesota), while Kent Nitta (Fountain Valley, California) is the alternate. Each finishing one point apart, Anna Miscione (Ramona, California), Alexandria Zuleta-Visser (Orlando, Florida) and Meghan Collins (High Springs, Florida) will make up the recurve junior women's team having taken a strong lead over the remainder of the field throughout the day. Nicole Turina (Honolulu, Hawaii) ranked 4th to take the alternate position.
USA Archery CEO Denise Parker shared her congratulations with the team: "We are proud to have such talented young archers representing the U.S. for the World Archery Youth Championships. On behalf of USA Archery, we wish them lots of luck as they prepare for this event in the upcoming months and look forward to their bright futures in the sport."
