DARRINGTON, Washington - The World Archery Field Championships - U.S. Team Trials wrapped today in a fast-paced race to the finish before the rain turned to a downpour. After three days of competition, Team USA has put together a strong team to send to Cortina, Italy this September.
The top eight archers in each adult and youth division competed at eight targets with running cumulative scores from the past two days of U.S. National Field Championships. Cuts were then made to the top four archers in each category and they finished with four more targets of competition to finalize each three-person team.
Reigning individual world field champions Brady Ellison and Steve Anderson won the trials outright in the recurve and compound men's divisions. Ellison will be joined by Nathan Yamaguchi and Matt Requa while the compound squad rounds out with twelve-time world field medalist Dave Cousins and, making his Team USA debut, Dan Jasa.
2012 world field silver medalist Paige Pearce and Heather Koehl won the compound and recurve women's divisions outright too. Pearce will compete in Italy with 2016 team members Jamie Van Natta and Heather Gore. Crystal Gauvin, who competed in Dublin 2016 with a compound, now joins Koehl on the recurve team along with Washington local Deanna Puls.
Reigning world field team champion John Demmer III returns to Team USA to lead the barebow men's squad of John Dillinger and Demmer's 2016 teammate, Ben Rogers. Fawn Girard won the barebow women's trials after picking up field archery less than two months ago. Girard, who competed for Team USA at last year's World Archery 3-D Championships will compete in Italy with Kim Hartman and Jennifer Stoner.
Girard commented: "I picked up field archery about seven weeks ago as a new challenge. After 3-D, I asked myself what was next and this seemed like the right next step. The girls here are awesome. We had so much fun and our group is so supportive and encouraging, we help each other out, what more could you ask for? We have an awesome team and are going to rock in Italy!"
2016 World Champion and silver medalist Sophia Strachan and Savannah Vanderwier return for the compound junior women's team, joined again by Cassidy Cox. Connor Sears, Eli Hughes and Jesse Clayton will fill out the compound junior men's team.
Three Washington locals filled the recurve junior women's team: Erin White, Faith Cook and Arianna Santiago. 2016 teammember Alex Gilliam returns to lead the recurve junior men's team with Joseph Scarboro and Nicholas Kalakanis.
Reigning world silver medalist and team champion Mark Schaludraff won the barebow junior men's trials, after taking the national title on his birthday yesterday. He will compete in Italy with Daniel Schell and Andrew Ford. Abigail Weir, a member of the 2016 world bronze medalist team, returns with Laura Hughes for the barebow junior women's category, this time joined by Sophia Hickerson.
