NEWBERRY, Florida - The World Archery Indoor Championships - U.S. Team Trials concluded today with round robin match play for the top eight archers in each category. The final top three will represent Team USA at the World Archery Indoor Championships in Yankton, South Dakota in mid-February 2018.
Archers were awarded points for placement in qualification and bonus points for reaching certain scores. Points continued to accumulate today for matches won and each archer's three arrow average score. With bonus points, the best possible trials point score an archer could achieve was 26. Brady Ellison (Globe, Arizona) continued to lead the recurve men in competition play today, the only archer in any division to earn the full perfect score of 26 points, winning all seven matches today with the highest arrow average on the field. Ellison punched his ticket to Yankton with Jack Williams (Irvine, California) and Vic Wunderle (San Antonio, Texas), who scored 20 and 16 trials points respectively, far ahead of the rest of the men.
Mackenzie Brown (Flint, Texas) was also a significant standout in the recurve women's competition, finishing the day with 24 trials points after winning all seven matches, ahead of Tatyana Muntyan (Delray Beach, Florida) who had 17. The third spot came down to a dead tie between five-time Olympian Khatuna Lorig (Denver, Colorado) and famed compound shooter turned recurve Crystal Gauvin (Dayville, Connecticut). Gauvin, shooting to make her first international team on the recurve side, and Lorig went to a tiebreaker shoot off match and Gauvin destroyed in a 6-0 shut out to take the last spot on the team.
After setting a world record in qualification yesterday (pending verification) Paige Pearce Gore (Red Bluff, California) continued her dominant reign over this year's indoor season taking the top spot with 25 trials points. Joining Gore in Yankton will be Mary Hamm (Florence, Texas), who scored 21 trials points today and was the only archer to upset Gore in matchplay, and Breanna Theodore (Hibbing, Minnesota), who was part of the junior world championship team earlier this year.
The compound men's bracket was incredibly close, with many of the top archers tied for much of the day, or just one or two trials points apart. In the end, a shoot off 10 gave Broadwater the last big win he needed to finish on top with 21 trials points. Tate Morgan (Billings, Montana) was just behind, finishing with 20 points, and the final spot goes to Kris Schaff (Billings, Montana).
After crushing qualification yesterday, Cassidy Cox (Albuquerque, New Mexico), who competed on both the junior and senior outdoor World Championship teams this year, neatly wrapped up the tournament today with 25 out of the maximum 26 points available to seal the top junior compound woman's spot. Joining Cox in Yankton will be reigning Indoor world bronze medalist Athena Caiopoulos (Irvine, California) and Anna Scarbrough (Arnoldsville, Georgia), who finished with 22 and 16 points respectively.
Ethan King (London, Kentucky) also solidly locked up the top compound junior men's spot with 25 trials points, followed by Curtis Broadnax (Social Circle, Georgia) and Zachary Harris (Loganville, Georgia).
On the recurve junior range, Trenton Cowles (Tarzana, California) and Seth McWherter (Central City, Iowa) came in close yesterday but held their first and second positions to score a total of 22 and 20 trials points each and will be joined in Yankton by Adam Heidt (Springfield, Georgia), who scored a total of 16 points.
The recurve junior women's bracket was even more stratified as Inga Pever (Houston, Texas) was the standout performer, taking 23 points after winning all matches today. Also headed to Yankton: Jennifer Kim (Santa Ana, California) and Katherine Wu (San Francisco, California), who finished with 17 and 15 points each.
