BERLIN, Germany - The 2018 Archery World Cup in Berlin is the fourth stage of the prestigious circuit, an annual favorite, and the last chance to earn world cup ranking points for a shot at the Final in Samsun, Turkey later this year. A huge event, 383 athletes from 52 countries are competing for their shot.
With the new rule in place that each stage winner automatically qualifies for the Final, each archer has a chance. USA's Braden Gellenthien holds the top spot on ranking points alone and has already punched his ticket to Turkey. Kris Schaff and Reo Wilde also sit in the top eight, but only two archers per nation may qualify. In the compound women's rankings, Paige Pearce and Jamie Van Natta are latched on to 7th and 8th going into Berlin and will need strong finishes in Berlin to stay in it. Brady Ellison also will need to pull a high finish, currently sitting 6th for the recurve men.
Schaff led the compound men in qualification this morning, finishing 2nd with a 711 just behind the Netherlands' Mike Schloesser with a 713. Gellenthien's 704 and Steve Anderson's 703 qualified them 10th and 12th to lock up the top team qualification spot, 16 points clear the rest of the field.
Pearce scored a 692 to qualify 8th and seal a bye into the 1/16th elimination rounds. With teammates Van Natta and Lexi Keller, the trio qualified 4th. Pearce and Schaff also have a 4th place seed in the mixed team event. World Archery voted earlier this week to introduce mixed team qualification world records as the event has been added to the Olympic program for 2020 and greater attention has turned to this portion of the world cup events.
Khatuna Lorig and Brady Ellison each qualified 16th in the recurve categories and 9th as a mixed team duo with individual respective scores of 634 and 659. Alex Bourdage and Jack Williams join Ellison in the men's team event with a qualification rank of 7th, while Lorig teams up with Mackenzie Brown and Erin Mickelberry, a repeat of last month's World Cup Salt Lake 4th place team, with an 8th place seed in Berlin.
