Over 1700 archers competed in the recent U.S. National Indoor and JOAD National Indoor Championships, held over a three week period spanning the end of February to mid-March, at nine different locations across the United States. The U.S. National Indoor event had athletes competing for a possible cumulative score of 1200 (two FITA-Indoor rounds of 60 arrows each at 18 meters), while the JOAD National Indoor competitors shot a single JOAD Indoor round of 60 arrows, following JOAD rules, at the 18 meter distance.
The U.S. National Indoor Champion for the Male Senior Recurve category was Olympian Brady Ellison, shooting an 1184; second place went to Thomas Stanwood (Middleboro, MA), with his score of 1175, while five-time Olympian Richard "Butch" Johnson shot an 1174 for third place. In the Female Senior Recurve category, it was two-time Olympian Jennifer Nichols (Bryan, TX) who took the U.S. National Indoor Championship title, shooting an 1156; she was followed by Kayla DeBord (College Station, TX), shooting an 1124, and USA Archery Resident Athlete Heather Koehl (Sheboygan Falls, WI) in third place with 1121.
The competition was very close in the compound divisions, with multi-time World Champion Dave Cousins (Standish, ME) winning the title for the Male Senior Compound category, shooting an 1194. Chance Beaubouef (Mt. Juliet, TN) took second place, just two points behind with 1192, while reigning World Champion Reo Wilde (Pocatello, ID) held third with 1191. For the Female Senior Compound category, the National Indoor Champion was 2010 National Target Champion Erika Anschutz (Dumas, TX) with her score of 1174; Mary Hamm (Liberty Hill, TX) followed with 1168; and Christie Colin (Ransomville, NY) rounded out the top three, shooting an 1165.
For youth archers, there were four different age groups in which archers were classified; archers were further classified by gender and equipment type, resulting in a combined thirty-two titles awarded to youth archers from both events. Highlights of the youth divisions for the U.S. National Indoor event included scores approaching the top adult scores from Junior Compound archers Garrett Abernathy (Aiken, SC), winning the junior men's category, with an 1185, and Sarah Lance (Wyandotte, MI) taking the junior women's category in the same event with an 1169.
In the JOAD National Indoor Championships, top scorers included Nathan Yamaguchi (Phoenix, AZ) in the Male Cadet Recurve category, scoring a 571 to win, and Lauren Clamon (Chula Vista, CA) in the Female Cub Recurve category, winning her title with a score of 579. Both archers are also members of the USA Archery Junior Dream Team.
Archers from nearly every state came out in force to compete for these National Championship titles. Though the largest equipment divisions were Olympic Recurve and FITA Compound, those shooting longbow, barebow, crossbow and compound fingers equipment also participated in the U.S. National Indoor Championships. The event was one of the qualifying tournaments for the 2012 Junior and Cadet United States Archery Teams (USAT); for senior archers, the National Indoor Champions will be named to the 2012 USAT based on the 2012 USAT Selection Procedures. Competitors for the U.S. National Indoor event ranged in age from under eight years old, to the Master 70 Plus group; divisions were offered for both able-bodies and para-archers. For the JOAD National Indoor event, archers from age six through twenty who belonged to a registered JOAD Club were eligible to compete. Archers shooting in either event were required to be current USA Archery members at the time of the competition.
