HAMILTON, Ohio - After a very humid practice day cut short by thunderstorms, beautiful weather set in for the first day of qualification rounds at the 129th US National Target Championships and Easton JOAD Nationals. While the wind favored the spectators, some archers struggled to stay strong as the day wore on.
For the youth archers competing in the Easton JOAD Nationals, the qualification round is shot at one distance over two days and will serve as a ranking round for their elimination matches; they will also compete in a team round on Saturday. For senior and masters archers participating in the U.S. National Target Championships, today served as the first half of the battle for those seeking National Champion titles. The scores from the US National Target Championships will also serve to rank eligible senior archers for the U.S. Open on Saturday.
Zachary Garrett, Byron Crites, and Greg Twombly are sitting in the top three positions for recurve junior men while Lauren Clamon, Lin Chih-Yu of Chinese-Taipei, and Madison Eich left the field in the top three recurve junior women's spots (with Chih-Yu in the Guest division). Duane Hunt, Alex Wifler, and Danny Button join Brogan Williams, Gabrielle Cyr and Lexi Keller as the top leaders of the men and women's junior compound divisions.
Geun Kim, Andrew Mateo and
Christopher Plumeau, and Eliana Claps, Anna Miscione and Chinese-Taipei's Cho
Yun-Chen topped the Cadet Recurve divisions, the single largest age category on
the field, while Kolby Hanley, Christopher Bee, and Jonathan Clark, and Allie
Blazek, Allie Canaday and Molly Veith hold down the top three spots in each
compound cadet division.
Hardy Trafford, Gus Braendle, and Austin Cha, and Chinese-Taipei's Yeh
Hsiu-Ting, Madeleine Ducote and Meghan Collins are poised for success in the
recurve cub divisions, while Logan Bunker, Ted Strychalski, and Andrew
Mouchabeck, and Victoria Kamilar, Hala Skelton, and Gabrielle Keiser are in the
same positions for the compound cub groups.
It was also a good day for the leaders of the recurve bowman divisions: Tyler King, Darek Wiss, Devin Oblander, Alexa Claps, Lo Yi-Hui of Chinese-Taipei and Rishika Kumar. Similar success was felt by the top qualifiers so far the compound bowman divisions: Spencer Yee, Samuel White, Jacob Estrada, Sachiko Keane, Trinity Todd, and Sarah Spangler.
Erika Jones dominated the compound women's division with an impressive hold over Fiona McClean of Canada and Jamie Van Natta. Olympian Brady Ellison led the pack of recurve men, followed by Jacob Wukie and Jeremiah Cusick, a young archer in the midst of a true breakout season. Braden Gellenthien is ahead of the compound men with a nice lead over Rodger Willet Jr. and Bridger Deaton. Tan Ya-Ting of Chinese-Taipei is in first for the women's recurve division, ahead of Olympian Miranda Leek and Chinese-Taipei's Lin Shih-Chia.
Gary Yamaguchi and Elzbieta Tworek are the top qualifiers so far for the Recurve Master's 50+ divisions while Jeff Wiseman and Angie Olds are holding down first in the Recurve Master's 60+ divisions. Larry Skinner is ahead of the Recurve Master's 70+ division. Jeff Button and Sandie Swirles-Duncan are atop the Compound Master's 50+. Ted Lemanski and Linda Huff sit in the top position for Compound Master's 60+ and Darrel Gehman and Mary Wenzel hold first for the Compound Master's 70+ divisions.
Russell Wolfe is in first for the Recurve ARW2 Men's division. Timothy Palumbo and Lee Ford are on top of the Recurve AR Standing divisions. Dugie Denton has a small lead on first for the Compound AR Open Men. Charlene Trafford is solidly in first for the Barebow women. Elizabeth Coombe is poised for gold in the Barebow Master's 50+ as is Skip Trafford in the Barebow Master's 60+ division. Dave Hryn is set to win the Compound Fingers Master's 50+ division, as is Jerry Wenzel for the Compound Fingers Master's 70+ division.
After the completion of scoring tomorrow, the prestigious Easton and Shenk awards will be given to the top eligible compound and recurve archers with the highest combined scores from U.S. National Indoor Championships, U.S. National Field Championships and U.S. National Target Championships. These awards, named after Jim Easton and Clayton Shenk, are high honors recognizing excellence in all archery venues.
