The No. 1 archer in the world Brady ELLISON (USA) and three Olympic medallists went to the Andre AGASSI College Preparatory Academy of Las Vegas on Friday, February 10 to give an archery introduction to more than 200 young students.
Following the visit of Longines Ambassador Andre AGASSI at the World Archery Indoor Championships finals last Thursday, where he presented the new champions with Longines watches, a strong delegation of coaches and archers went to the Andre AGASSI College Preparatory Academy of Las Vegas to offer a demonstration and teach the students how to shoot their first arrows.
The No. 1 recurve men archer in the world and favorite for the Olympic gold medal next July in London, Brady ELLISON (AZ), demonstrated his skills. Rather than shooting the bull's eye of the target as in competition, Brady had to blow up balloons placed on targets about 20 yards away. Four arrows, four blown balloons, and the crowd of young people was very excited. Brady then spoke about why he picked up archery and how he became so successful at it.
Later on several classes from the school, for a total of about 200 students, had the chance to shoot some arrows under the guidance of a team of certified instructors/coaches from USA Archery, including Bob Pian (AZ), John Stover (MI), Doug Engh (FL), MJ Rogers (SD) and Sarah Bernstein (NJ). Students also received the support of three time Olympic champion KIM Soo-Nyung (KOR), the 1992 team Olympic champion Juan Carlos HOLGADO (ESP), and the 1988 Olympic medallist Denise PARKER (USA). All of the Olympians now occupy various functions in archery management and were present at the world championships in Las Vegas. They kindly came to enjoy this afternoon where the cheers of the kids were responding to each blown-up balloon.
AGASSI is an Olympic gold medallist and eight time Grand Slam singles champion, but continued his efforts in the public sector after his 2006 retirement by founding the Andre AGASSI Foundation for Education, which has raised over 177 million for underserved youth in the greater Las Vegas area. The Andre AGASSI College Preparatory Academy of Las Vegas is a tuition free public charter school for children in the historical West Las Vegas community.
