Colorado Springs, CO - USA Archery has announced the winners of the U.S. National Indoor Championships and JOAD Indoor Championships, which were held February 24-March 11.
Among the winners of the most hotly contested categories are veteran champions and newcomers: Olympians Jennifer Nichols (TX) and Butch Johnson (CT) will take titles in the men's and women's recurve categories, with 1152 and 1177 respectively. Sarah Lance (MI), who shot as a team gold medal winning junior in the recent World Archery Indoor Championships, takes first in the female senior compound category for this event with 1174. On the men's side, it's a tie between Braden Gellenthien (VA) and Reo Wilde (ID), dropping just five points for the first place win.
There were strong showings in the youth categories as well, with Sean McLaughlin (OH) and LaNola Pritchard (CA) winning the junior recurve titles for the National Indoor; Bridger Deaton (IA) and Connor Kelly (CA) share the championship win for the male junior compound category. World Archery Indoor Championships silver medalist Lexi Keller (WI) wins for the female junior compound group. Andrew Mateo (AZ) and Olympic Hopeful Madison Eich (WA) are the first place archers in the cadet recurve category, while the wins go to Danny Button (WI) and Leighcia Meylan (MI) for the cadet compound.
Ryan Oliver (FL) and Eliana Claps (WA) will take the championship titles in the cub recurve group; Kevin Clayton (VA) and Cinder Sexton (AZ) topped the cub compound categories to claim their own wins. For the bowman recurve archers, Brian Bullis (AZ) and Alexa Claps (WA) post two more wins for the powerhouse states of Arizona and Washington, while Ted Strychalski (PA) and Heidi Chretien (MA) claim the championship on the compound side.
The JOAD Indoor Champions are Matthew Zumbo (CA), Pritchard, Kelly, and Carli Cochran (PA) in the junior recurve and compound categories, respectively; Mateo, Michelle Gilbert (MD), Dillon McGeorge (GA), and Callie Gallant (ME) take the wins for the cadets. Austin Cha (CO), Jenna Ahn (CA), Zachary Pescitelli, and Sexton claim the titles in the cub categories, while Bullis, Alexa Claps, Blake Ballou (MI) and Holly Pizzini (MI) win the bowman category.
Archers in para, traditional, crossbow, barebow, compound fingers, recurve masters and compound masters categories shot as well, with strong participation numbers in the masters categories.
Many of the locations hosting the event reported positive feedback from competitors, including Massachusetts, where an additional shooting time was added to accommodate additional archers wishing to shoot in the JOAD event. Mountlake Terrace, Washington hosted its first-ever National Indoor Championships, an additional location for National Indoor Championships this year.
