At the 24th Torneo Batalla de Carabobo IV Juegos Alba, several members of the USA Archery Junior Dream Team are demonstrating their determination to become the next archery superstars in the U.S. With the first day of qualifications complete, and long distances shot, several team members turned out standout performances at this tournament in Valencia, Venezuela.
In the recurve junior men's category, Chris Luman (USA) shot a strong 296 to medal at 90 meters, the first of two long distances shot yesterday. He was followed at that distance by teammate Daniel McLaughlin, shooting a 295, and Anthony Lopez (LAR) with a 280.
Other Junior Dream Team members in that category included Sean McLaughlin, shooting a 277 for the fourth spot at 90 meters, and Nathan Yamaguchi, in seventh with a 262. At 70 meters, the archers remained strong; Luman medaled at this distance also, with a 310. Sean McLaughlin took the second spot at 70 meters with his score of 306, while Lopez was third with a 304, and Daniel McLaughlin placed fourth at that distance with 304 as well.
Overall, Luman is currently leading qualifications, with a 606 overall; Daniel McLaughlin is holding second with 599, and Lopez is occupying the third ranking position with 584. U.S. team members Sean McLaughlin and Yamaguchi follow in the fourth and eight spots, with 583 and 540, respectively.
For the women, Team USA's Mackenzie Brown put forth a strong performance to take the top spot at 70 meters, shooting a 310 for that distance. Yerubi Suarez (VEN) was the second ranked archer at that distance with her score of 291; Saraneth Rivera (VEN) took the third spot with a 278. At 70 meters, Junior Dream Team member Michelle Gilbert placed fifth, scoring 275 points; teammate Heather Trafford shot a 260 to rank seventh at 70.
Moving to 60 meters, Suarez led the pack, shooting a 316; Brown was just behind with her score of 310. In third was Gilbert, coming back with a 300; USA's Trafford shot a 292 to finish in fifth for the second distance. Overall, it was Brown who ended the day in the top spot with her score of 620; Suarez holds second, shooting a 607, while Gilbert takes the third position with 575. Trafford ends the first two distances in 7th with a 552.
The competition continues Wednesday with the second half of the qualification round, and elimination rounds later in the week. Archers are supported by a full staff, including coaches Jim White, Alex Meyer and Steve Caufman, and team leader Steve Cornell. Complete results can be found at http://www.feveta.com.
