USA Archery recently learned from Don Orris of Jefferson, Iowa that a fund drive has been started by the Jefferson Community to honor 1972 Olympic Archery Gold Medalist Doreen Wilber. To make a tax deductable contribution to the fund, donations may be made to the Jefferson Community Betterment Foundation, with a notation To Doreen Wilber Memorial on the check. Don is the contact person heading up this memorial for Doreen which will be a flat bronze plaque, a head bust or a full size bronze statue depending on funds received. Doreen represented the USA at the 1972 Olympic Games held in Munich, West Germany.
"Doreen didn't just win the Olympic Gold Medal in 1972, she was a true champion in communicating the drive to be the best person in every aspect of your life," said Orris. "She passed this on to every person she gave archery instruction to, especially the youth."
Doreen won many archery awards during her competitive years and represented the USA and National Archery Association on eight international teams. She won Silver Medals at two World Target Championships and took top honors nationally at four NAA Outdoor Target Championships (1969, '71, '73, '74). She started the GANG GREENE JOAD CLUB which is named for Greene County in Iowa and because the kids thought it was cool to be the only infectious JOAD Club. Wilber coached at the JOAD Club for 12 years before retiring. She passed last October.
"Doreen was a joy to shoot with," said Orris. "This memorial would be a great reminder that dreams are achieved through determination, focus and a positive attitude toward all."
