ANTALYA, Turkey - The Archery World Cup eliminations this morning saw 22 archers punch their tickets to Odense, Denmark for the circuit Final this September. For Brady Ellison (Globe, Arizona), this will be an unprecedented seventh consecutive World Cup Final, and the seventh Final invitation for Reo Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho) as well.
Ellison ranked first in the World Cup circuit this year after winning mixed team gold at the circuit opener in Shanghai and then individual gold at the second stage in Medellin. Also clinching an invitation in the recurve men's bracket: Zach Garrett (Wellington, Missouri). Garrett won the individual silver in Shanghai and this summer will be his first World Cup Final, and his first Olympic Games.
Crystal Gauvin (Dayville, Connecticut) picked up a team and individual silver in Medellin this year, and locked her place in the Final for compound women, as did Wilde for the men after winning team silver in Shanghai and individual silver in Medellin.
At just 16 years old, Dahlia Crook (Piedmont, Kansas) could be looking to earn her spot as well, depending on whether or not she takes the gold later this weekend. She will be the only U.S. archer competing in the individual finals this weekend.
Crook and Gauvin opened eliminations this morning in a head to head match with each other, brought the score to a tied 139-139, and 24th ranked Crook took the win in a single arrow shoot off. She continued through the brackets, upsetting No. 8 Marcos from Spain 140-137 in the 1/8th, where Crook's teammate Danielle Reynolds exited the competition to Italy's Tonioli.
Crook continued to knock out France's De Matos 139-138 in the quarterfinals before taking a semifinal win 144-143 over Turkey's Bostan. She will face World Ranked No. 1, Colombia's Sara Lopez for the gold.
Surprising upsets shook up the compound men's brackets as Bridger Deaton (Pella, Iowa), pre-seeded into the 1/16th this morning was eliminated in his first match 144-145. Braden Gellenthien (Hudson, Massachusetts) was also pre-seeded into this morning's competition, and faced teammate Steve Anderson (Salt Lake City, Utah) in the 1/16. Gellenthien took the win by a point, 144-143 to advance to a head to head match with teammate Wilde.
Wilde and Gellenthien came to a 144-all tie and Wilde nailed the shoot off win with an X. In the quarterfinals, he met the Netherland's Schloesser, who won with a comfortable margin 148-141.
Khatuna Lorig (West Hollywood, California) was the sole U.S. woman remaining in today's competition. Seeded 14th, she took an easy 6-2 win in the 1/16th, but was stopped in the 1/8th 7-3 by Russia's Perova.
Jake Kaminski (Gainesville, Florida) and Garrett had a morning opening head to head match as well, and Garrett took the win 6-2 before he was stopped in a 1/8th round shoot off with Chinese Taipei's Wei. Ellison cruised through a 1/8th match with Italy's Mauro Nespoli 7-3 but his run ended in the quarterfinals with a 6-2 loss to Korea's Kim Woojin.
Competition continues today as the U.S. women fight in the Final World Qualification Tournament to earn their team qualification for the Rio Olympic Games.
