Archers from 14 countries officially started the 21st Arizona Cup Friday by participating in the largest Arizona Cup ever.
After a quick dedication of the
Ellison started atop the standings, then fell to Kaminsky at the break after 36 arrows, with their scores only differing by one point during the see-saw competition. As the two stayed within one point of each other, Brady pulled away at the end, with his experience in desert conditions leading to the five-point difference at the end of the first 72 arrows.
In women's recurve, Khatuna Lorig finished in a very dominating fashion, pulling up to second place after outscoring national team member Jennifer Nichols in the second half of the day. However, Jennifer and Khatuna could not hold back a determined Aida Roman from Team
USA Archery Paralympic team member Jeff Fabry stayed strong the entire day, finishing atop the day's results with a 668 and the next closest competitor back 53 points behind. Junior archers also finished well, with Paige Pearce, Matt Zumbo and Miranda Leek ending their day in the lead.
U.S. Compound archers Dave Cousins and Jamie Van Natta stayed atop the leaderboard, with Cousins staying ahead of 2010 World Archery Festival winner Dietmar Trillus and Van Natta finishing the day 15 points ahead of Camilla Soemod of Denmark.
As the team rounds and Cadets age-groups began, the temperatures and wind that the Arizona Cup is known for started to rear its head. Temperatures heated up to the mid-80s and the wind gusts that were non-existent earlier in the day started gusting, creating challenging conditions for those in the later sessions.

On Saturday, the second qualification round will begin, and after that, the National Team rounds and the final Cadet round will be completed.
