HARRISONBURG, Virginia - After a day of fierce competition at the National Outdoor Collegiate Championships (NOCC), team titles have been decided, and individual archers have been ranked for tomorrow's head-to-head eliminations.
Columbia University, hosts James Madison University (JMU) and University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA) came away the big winners, with double gold medals each.
For the barebow categories, it was UCLA and Sonoma State University earning gold and silver, respectively, in the men's category. UCLA and Georgia Southern University were the gold and silver medalists for the barebow women.
The bowhunter division was led by Texas A&M on the men's side, outshooting silver medalists Penn College. University of Wisconsin - LaCrosse won bronze versus UCLA. The bowhunter women's category saw Penn College take the gold medal win over JMU, while Texas A&M finished with bronze.
JMU were the gold medalists in the compound men's team category, edging out Penn College, while Texas A&M walked away with bronze versus UCLA. For the compound women, it was Columbia University ahead of Texas A&M, who took silver, and Penn College winning bronze over Emmanuel College.
Columbia made history by also clinching the team gold in the recurve women's event, versus silver medalists Texas A&M. JMU claimed bronze after a win over University of California - San Diego. The recurve men's gold went to JMU, with Texas A&M taking silver and University of California - Davis winning bronze versus UCLA.
There was some movement in the individual ranks as well, as the double 72 arrow qualification round concluded today, seeding archers for tomorrow's head-to-head matchplay.
Eliot Simon of University of Connecticut led the recurve men's qualifications with a 1232; Branduin Stroud of the University of California qualified first for the recurve women, shooting a 1214.
The compound men's and women's categories were led by Garrett Abernethy and Emily Bee, respectively, shooting for the University of South Carolina and Michigan State University. Abernethy put up a 1393, while Bee shot a 1344 for the top spot.
Kelton Cheng, shooting for the University of California - San Diego, delivered a solid 1209 to qualify first in the barebow men's category. Megan Larson of UCLA shot a 1049 for the top spot on the women's side.
Leading the bowhunter men's category: Joel Taylor of Texas A&M, shooting a 1292, while Kathryn Novotny of Stanford hit a 1269 to lead the women.
