Like the weather conditions in Antalya, Turkey - 90 degrees and sunny - competition on the field was hot, with fierce competition for the top spots in both the men's and women's compound categories. Archers took to the field to shoot a 72 arrow, 50 meter qualifying round which kicked off the second day of competition at the second stage of the Archery World Cup.
Team USA's Christie Colin and Jamie Van Natta, with matching scores of 695, qualified number two and three respectively in the women's compound category. Russia's Albina Loginova shot a 699 to qualify first, while Team USA's Kailey Johnston and Erika Anschutz took the 15th and 17th spots, each scoring a 685.
On the men's side, Dominique Genet (FRA) ended with the #1 seed, shooting a 710; he was joined in the top three by Sergio Pagni (ITA), also with 710, and Denmark's Martin Damsbo, with his score of 709. Braden Gellenthien was the top qualifying male compound archer, in the 5th position with 708; Reo Wilde qualified number six with the same score. Also representing the U.S. were Rodger Willett, Jr., qualifying 17th with 700, and Darrin Christenberry, ending in 20th with a 699.
Following the compound qualifications, the compound and recurve women took to the field to shoot their 1/24, and 1/48 and 1/24 elimination matches, respectively. Beginning this year in the World Cup series, those archers qualifying in the top 8 are automatically seeded in the 1/16 round.
For the women's compound eliminations, match play began with the 1/24 round. Anschutz faced Gizem Kocaman (TUR) in today's match, winning it with a decisive 145-132 victory. Teammate Johnston fared equally well, winning her match against Mexico's Noemi Sandoval, 141-135. Team USA's Colin and Van Natta will begin match play tomorrow, joining their teammates in the 1/16 eliminations.
For the recurve women, Jennifer Nichols took her 1/48 match, meeting Kristine Esebua (GEO) and winning, 7-3. Nichols advanced to the 1/24 round, where she also outscored Poland's Natalia Lesniak, 7-1. Team USA's Lori Cieslinski, seeded 87th, met 26th ranked Khatuna Narimanidze (GEO) and won with a 6-4 decision; in the 1/24 round, she faced Colombia's Natalia Sanchez and advanced with a score of 6-4. Miranda Leek, facing Olga Pilipova (KAZ) in the 1/48, was unable to stop her opponent, retiring after a 6-2 loss. Khatuna Lorig, qualifying fifth yesterday, received a bye into the 1/16 round.
Team USA's recurve men also fared well in today's matches, with Jacob Wukie defeating Benjamin Nott (AUS) in the 1/48 with a 6-2 win. Advancing to the 1/24, Wukie met Daniel Pineda (COL) and took the match with a 6-0 shutout. Teammate Joe Fanchin faced Daniel Pacheco (COL) in the 1/48, winning 6-4; Fanchin advanced to meet Sermet Cinar (TUR). In an exciting back-and-forth contest, the archers eventually reached a 5-5 tie; Fanchin clinched the win with a successful one-arrow shootoff. Teammate Jake Kaminski was eliminated in the 1/48 round with a narrow 6-5 defeat versus Andres Gomez (ESP).
Tomorrow's compeittion will open with mixed team eliminations, followed by the compound men's 1/48 individual matches, and then individual competition through the semifinals for all categories.
