DUBLIN, Ohio - The 2016 U.S. Archery Team (USAT) Qualifier Series comes to a close this weekend with the fourth and final USAT event of the summer - the inaugural Buckeye Classic. In the heart of the state that made chili on spaghetti famous, the ACE Archers club has put together a fantastic three day event on a beautiful field.
Official practice kicked off today and competition continues tomorrow with a 72 arrow qualification round. Hot competition features members of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Archery Team, including Mackenzie Brown, Jake Kaminski and Brady Ellison, as well as Olympic medalist and Ohio local Jacob Wukie. Ohio native Crystal Gauvin will be a top contender on the compound side along with USAT scoring leaders Jamie Van Natta, Reo Wilde, Braden Gellenthien and Steve Anderson.
Jacob Wukie of Fremont, Ohio commented: "I'm really excited to be here in a familiar area. One of the things I'm most excited for is catching up with the guys who went to Rio and congratulating them. The venue is nice and the weather is good, I'm looking forward to shooting tomorrow."
The rankings from this event will be used to determine placement on the U.S. Archery Teams for seniors, juniors, cadets and new this year: masters. For many archers, this is a last chance to secure a spot on those prestigious teams and the scores are close. For the compound junior women and recurve junior men, the final spot is less than a point out of reach for several competitors who will need strong performances here in Ohio to make the cut.
USA Archery extends a big thank you to the field crew, local staff and volunteers who worked so hard to get this new event ready. To follow live scores click here. For more, follow USA Archery on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
