SHANGHAI, China - The Hyundai Archery World Cup begins its 2024 journey on Tuesday with the first of three stages, and the USA has a 16-strong team in attendance.
The three stages (reduced from four due to the Olympic Games) take place in Shanghai, China (April 23-28), followed by Yecheon in Korea (May 21-26) and then finishing in Antalya, Turkey (June 18-23) overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
Immediately prior to Stage 3 in Turkey, there will be the final qualifier for the Paris Games, with the USA’s men chasing team quota slots.
Archers who win one of the three World Cup stages, or amass enough points throughout the stages, will qualify for the World Cup Final, which is in Tlaxcala, Mexico (October 19-20). This year, there is a third way in which archers can stamp their ticket for Tlaxcala, and that is if they win the Olympics.
Team USA’s roster for Stage 1 involves eight men and eight women, with an even split between recurve and compound.
The USA has an archer in the world’s top 10 in each category, including world number in recurve women, Casey Kaufhold. Brady Ellison is number two in recurve men, Alexis Ruiz sits five in compound women and Sawyer Sullivan is nine in compound men.
Ruiz arrives in Shanghai after scooping triple gold at the Pan American Championships in Medellin, Colombia earlier this month. Kaufhold walked away with two gold medals as the USA topped the overall medals table.
Ellison is no stranger to success at the World Cup. Only Sara Lopez (Colombia), with eight, has more Archery World Cup Champion trophies to her name. Ellison has five, as well as 10 individual stage wins. Lopez has 11.
The compound women include the trio who claimed team gold in Medellin - Ruiz, Olivia Dean and Carson Krahe, as well as Cassidy Cox. Cox has three team golds at the World Cup, including in 2023 with Madison Cox and Danelle Lutz during Stage 1 in Turkey.
Stage 1 for Sawyer Sullivan last year saw him combine with Braden Gellenthien and James Lutz to shoot a new team world record in compound men.
On the recurve side, the women’s quartet enjoyed a strong Pan American Championships, during which they filled their quota slots for the Olympics. Meanwhile, Jackson Mirich and Jack Williams picked up silver and bronze in the individual competition.
